Lyrics
One
I met an old man
He was noble of birth
His body was wizened and old
He said he could take
My blackened heart
And turn my lead into gold
I did not understand
The symbols he made with his hand
As if the future were planned
Two
He said;
What are you hiding
Under the stone
What are you trying to withhold
The fire once lit
No longer burns
I fear that your heart has turned cold
His meaning was strange
But I knew I had to change
And life had to be rearranged
Three
In the thick of the night
He conjured for me
A sight that was strange to behold
I saw a white lamb
Whose purity shone
Leading me into his fold
He opened a book
And then I heard
The sound of one single word
Four
I saw in a dream
By a fire in a bowl
Base metal contained in a mould
Its shape I could see
Was reflected in me
An experiment under control
And when I awoke
At my feet lay the book
Its pages all turned to ash
Five
Sun shone as above
So below I did see
The glittering yellow of gold
I began to discern
The meaning it held
I was no longer was brazen and bold
The lead had been mined
The gold was refined
And cast to the shape of the mould
Six
Many years passed
I'd discovered at last
The meaning I sought all my life
When the wedding was held
As if under a spell
I turned and said to my wife
Can you now see
What's told by degree
It always take two to make three
Seven
The old man returned
To ask what I'd learned
His eyes burning redder than coals
He said to me
You hearts bought and sold
But you turned your lead into gold
Had it all been a plan?
As I turned around
In the mirror I saw the old man
