My Town

I don’t recognise my town, they keep pulling it down

And building new student flats and expensive hotels and shops

The streets where I grew up are now filled with builders’ trucks

Replacing old with new, making profit for the few

I’m sitting on Arthur’s Seat, looking down at the lights of Leith

With the old town full of dreams, the dreams we’re losing

We’ve got trams that we don’t need and a massive debt to feed

The planners don’t give a thought to the damage that they brought

They sold our Meadowbank, it’s just money in the bank

When all the trees are gone, it won’t help anyone
