    Chapter Summaries:

[00:00:01]Podcasting Smarter is the official Podbean from Podbean. It features podcasting interviews, best practices, and helpful tips. In today's episode, we'll hear all about this year's PodFest which is coming up in a couple of weeks.[00:00:55]Podbean will be in the expo hall at Podfest. And we are booth 34. We've got some free passes for everybody out there who's part of our Podbean family. Come join. Come say hi to the Podbean team. Use the code "PodbeanExpo34" for a free pass to the expo hall. [00:01:32]Podfest was created from a meetup of 13 people in 2013. Since then, Podbean has literally grown. In 2020, a week before the lockdowns, we had just under 2000 attendees. Collaboration with other podcasters is probably one of the most important things to help grow your show.[00:03:35]If you could go back and tell yourself some wisdom, what would you tell yourself? I would just tell myself, focus on your community and keep focusing on delivering value to podcasters.[00:04:17]The conference is a little different than your average creator con. We host the largest influencer meet and greet in podcasting in the world. The closing keynote is the audience itself of creators. It really is a community.[00:09:04]Chris: Podcasting is such a community based event. It's something where you really feel community around you. For anybody who hasn't attended an in person PodFest conference yet, we highly recommend going. I think PodFest is going to be good luck for those people that attend.[00:11:37]Chris: What else are you looking forward to at PodFest this year? John speaking about how to create passive income with your Podbean. There's a lot of presentations on how to add video to your podcast, streaming, and I'm excited for the monetization tracks that we have.[00:15:43]Chris: When we moved to Orlando, the conference was born in Tampa. In Tampa, I could get hotels for very cheap and keep the event profitable. Now in Orlando, we have people coming from all over the world.  The goodwill that you have in your community pays off.[00:20:02]The first tip for attendees is to get on the PodFest app. Get on the Whoova app, which is the most interactive community based app. Then when you show up and you want to hang out, go to the meetups. Try and force yourself to stay up a few hours after the conference and talk to people.[00:23:43]The US is becoming a mature marketplace, so we're seeing maturity in the US. The areas that excite me the most, Indonesia, Philippines, the Middle East region, North Africa. So we're just seeing a lot of growth internationally.[00:25:12]DAI means dynamic ad insertion. 83. DC Podfest 2019: Learning About Podcasting Through Our First Clip Show!

In the years that it’s been running, DC Podfest has prided itself on fostering a community for podcasters of any level or creed to come and find a place amongst like-minded people.  This year’s conference proved no different, with guests ranging from first-time “I might want to start a podcast” thinkers and plotters to folks like Josh Hallmark, creator of True Crime Bullsh**, Our Americana, and much more.  While the event only lasted two days, it brought forth a font of passion and dedication to the craft of podcasting.

We at Podbean sat down with four different podcasters to talk about their journey through the medium, and put their interviews together as a clip show to highlight the positivity, creativeness, and dedication to their work.

    89. Focus On Valuable Content Before Monetization with AdapNation

You might just live a little longer after this episode. That is because I am joined by Steve Katasi, the host of The AdapNation Podcast. AdapNation is an honest and raw British Podcast, focused on helping you practically improve and optimize your health, body and mind – inside and out. Luckily, he is also willing to help us optimize our podcasts too!

Steve's Podcast Confession: For this first 20-30 episodes his audio quality rubbish due to EMF interference. All he had to do was move a cord, and the sound issue was resolved.

    Steve's Podcasting Smarter Tips:

    • Although he did very well working in IT Sales, he realized it just wasn't his passion. However, the study of self optimization was a passion, and he decided he could offer something unique in that space with a brand supported by a podcast.

    • Steve's natural curiosity drives his interviews and in-depth content on a variety if subjects related to optimal health and wellness.

    • Steve taught himself podcast editing, and although his skills are adequate, he is finding it time consuming, and would like to outsource that piece of post production.

    • He gauges his success with patience. His growth in 2018 was slow, but skyrocketed in 2019 as a result of being a featured Podbean podcast, being featured on the Podbean app, and booking higher profile guests on the show.

    • He gets his high profile guests to share the episodes by make them look good. He researched their previous podcast interviews and finds topics and questions that have not been covered in other interviews so he can deliver a fresh conversation. He also makes it effortless for them to promote the show by giving them social media assets, to share and links to their episode.

    • He is using his podcast to feed a revenue-producing product by siphoning the best content from his podcasts into a paid, 100 day self optimization program delivered via daily email which is complemented with rich, curated content that takes the customer on a journey. He also sees a book in the future.

    • Steve has purposefully gone slowly in pursuing monetization because he wanted to focus on the quality of the content.

    • Steve engages on social media to promote his show, and is considering running ads for the show via PodAds

    • His biggest piece of advice for new podcasters: You have to know who you want as a listener, and how you will deliver to them continuous, real value.

Steve's theoretical podcast about his life: "Obsessive"

Steve's Fantasy Podcasters: Nelson Mandela and Albert Einstein

    91. Finding Your Podcasting Groove with The Sane Show

Hey there Pod Pals! I am thrilled to be talking to another member of our Podbean Family. Cliff Waddell is the host of The SANE Show, where he, along with his guests and friends, discuss a variety of random topics that are fun, entertaining and thought provoking.

    Cliff's Podcasting Smarter Tips:

    • Get a head start on your podcast production. Get your interviews pre-scheduled and recorded on a schedule.

    • Cliff is constantly trying to make his show better. One way he does this is by studying what other successful podcasts are doing.

    • Cliff focuses on content creation, content quality, content promotion, and content.

    • He realized that after he nailed down his process, it freed him up to elevate the quality of his show.

    • Having a podcast has improved his conversation, interview and sales skills.

    • People want to be involved, and have a say in your show.

    • 97% of his social media engagement comes from Instagram so that is where he spends his ad dollars.

    • Cliff spends about 3-4 hours a day on his podcast.

    • Cliff has podcast advisers!

    • Celebrate the small wins. They will keep you motivated, and remind you why you are doing this.

    • Cliff's advice for new podcasters is to always be planning. Don't get so comfortable that you forget about taking your podcast to the next level. That takes continuous planning in order to grow.

Cliff's hypothetical podcast about his life: "Cliff Hanger"

    Cliff's fantasy podcaster: Jerry Seinfeld

Please be sure to listen to The Sane Show on Podbean, or wherever you listen to podcasts. You can also follow Cliff in Twitter and @sane_show on Instagram.

    92. Find Your Audience Offline: Justin Herman of Controlled Chaos Podcast

Hey Pod Pals! On this episode we are joined by Justin Herman (@heyjustinherman on FB, TW, INSTA). Justin runs the youth ministry at Sandals Church and is the host of the Controlled Chaos Podcast (@PodcastChaos Twitter, @ControlledChaosPodcast Insta) in partnership with Christ In Youth.  Find out more about the Controlled Chaos Podcast or Christ In Youth at ControlledChaos.fun or CIY.com/Chaos

    Justin's Podcasting Smarter Tips:

    • Justin didn't find any podcasts speaking to the needs of junior high youth ministry. Being a youth minister himself, he knew he could help people working with junior high students in a Christian leadership capacity, with a podcast.

    • The name 'Controlled Chaos' was inspired by the title of a book by Justin's mentor. When he considered using the name, he reached out to his mentor who gave his blessing, and has even come on the podcast. Now, they've co-authored the revised addition of the book which is now for sale on Amazon

    • Justin engages his audience further by providing a curated discussion guide for eveery episode for church leaders to use for their groups.

    • Justin got approached by sponsors early thanks to his extremely defined audience. He asked for double what they suggested they pay for a sponsor spot.

    • Justin asks his guests to suggest other guests which keeps his guests spots booked out well in advance.

    • Justin found a podcast partner, Christ In Youth, who put the podcast in front of youth ministers. That partnership grew into a financial partner so Justin can now showcase the podcast at CIY events, and is even more integrated into the organization where he is front and center in front of his ideal audience.

    • Justin purposefully set out to find his audience offline. He started by approaching a Christian college and offering them valuable resources in exchange for sharing a link to his podcast along with the resources. The school ended up wanting to be more involved.

    • Justin's podcast has led to more speaking opportunities.

    • Video is on the horizon as well as another book!

    • During a recent strategy meeting they considered expanding their podcast to include high school ministry, but in the end they decided to stay focused on their original audience and turned to them via their Facebook group to find out what else they needed and in what formats.

    • Justin's one piece of advice for new podcasters is to stick with your vision, and don't let an opportunity tempt you away from that vision.

Justin's hypothetical podcast about his life: Life By Accident

Justin's Fantasy Podcasters: Jesus, General Patton, and individuals stuck fighting in a war they don't support

Jen and Vernon are back to spill some Podbeans! We are on the cusp of 2019, and we got some great advice on Twitter from some fellow Pod Pals. We also share some podcasting predictions for 2019. It's been a great year for podcasting, and we can't see what the next year has in store.

Podcasting Smarter Tips From Our Pod Pals on Twitter:

    From @HeyJustinHerman of @podcastchaos

“Be sharp on social media, follow people that follow you and DM people so they know there’s a real person there.  Offer some free stickers and encourage every person to leave you a reading and review!Be scrappy at the start to get momentum going!!”

    From Shlomoh Samuel of @ThePanenkaView

“Be consistent with your episodes. If putting out an episode on a Sunday, make sure it goes out.”

    From Heather of @SunPowerPod

“Take your Why, the reason you started and hold it close! Learn and adapt, make connections and celebrate the good ones...and when the going gets tough come back to your Why; what gave you the passion to begin!”

From @DJMetiMajor of the Let’s Do It Major Podcast

“Be yourself, don’t put on a persona for the podcast, find a topic and stick to it.”

    From our Pod Pals @netflixnswill

“Do it for yourself first, the audience second. If you aren't passionate for, and engaged with your topic, people will be able to tell and they won't be interested either.”

    From @slnhpodcast

"Be consistent. Ask questions. Support other podcasters. Have fun!"

Thanks for memorable year of podcast conversations! Don't forget to listen subscribe to Vernon's Podcast, The Space Between, HERE! It's a great one. :)

    94. Eric Hunley from Unstructured: Go Into It Giving Because It's All About Relationships

Hello podpals! On this episode,  I am being joined by Eric Hunley of the Unstructured Podcast! Jen and Shannon were interviewed on his podcast at Podcast Movement 2018, and it was about time Jen returned the favor. You can check out Jen and Shannon's episode all about Podbean HERE. Podcasters will learn a lot of from this interview--including how Unstructured got to over 10,000 Facebook fans.

    Eric's Podcasting Smarter Tips:

    • Eric is a fan of this podcast. Smart! :)
    • It tool Eric 10 yrs to launch because of imposter syndrome. Now he is about to publish his 100th episode in just 9 months.
    • He finds his guests in a variety of ways including facebook groups, previous guests, events, and reaching out to people he finds fascinating.
    • Although he has been lucky to bank episodes, he prefers to publish them as quickly as possible so that of his show is going in a direction that isn't working he can catch it sooner.
    • Eric uses Squadcast to record remote interviews and really likes the video feature that allows you to see your guest during the interview.
    • It's a long game.
    • Eric does hours of research on each guest to ensure that his episodes are very high quality. Just because a podcast has a modest audience does not mean it is not a quality podcast.
    • Eric puts systems in place to save him time by always scheduling his social media posts at the same time so he maintains consistency in his podcast promotion.
    • Eric bought a Facebook ad which resulted in him having over 10,000 fans on Unstructured's Facebook page. He outlines the process. Although he ended up with an unengaged audience, he finds value in the vanity metric for attracting high quality guests.
    • Eric also has a Facebook group which has become not only a resource for great interview questions, but the members have become real friends.
    • Although Eric spends hours preparing, he does not provide guests with pre-interview questions because he wants an authentic conversation.
    • He uses social media to market his podcast, and has noticed some increased traction on LinkedIn. He also chooses his release time so that it reaches the most time zones at an ideal time for listening.
    • Guests don't always have professional headshots. Bummer.
    • He subscribes to a service called Dlvrtit to help him with the quality of his Twitter content to free up some of his time for engaging.
    • When you attend a podcast conference don't look to get anything out of it. Go into it thinking, "What can I give".
    • Eric is writing a book about how to be a great podcast interviewer! Stay tuned for that!

    97. Podcast Your Passion and Find Your People: Season 04 Ep. 10

Today I get to chat with Podbean podcaster, Mike Troy who is the sole host and producer of the American Revolution Podcast: A chronological history of the Revolutionary War. Although Mike's family isn't into history like he is, he found a community of people who love history, and his podcast. Mike also shares a secret..one that is deeply buried on the internet.

    Podcasting Smarter Tips From Mike:

    • To prep for the launch of his podcast, Mike wrote 100, yes 100 episode scripts in advance of his first recording. Impressive!
    • As a solo podcaster, Mike imagines people listening and responding which got him comfortable solo hosting. He also has a script prepared and edits on the fly as needed with Audacity.
    • Podcasting helped Mike become a better everyday speaker--another benefit of podcasting!
    • Because Mike is very organized and well planned, Podbean's scheduling featured allows him to produce his episodes in advance of his publish date, and schedule them accordingly. Smart podcasting!
    • The podcast helped Mike get out of his shell. Introverted and shy by nature, Mike found a community of fellow history buffs on and off line thanks to his podcast.
    • Mike is active on social media and successfully connects with his audience online. Without the podcast, his knowledge of social media would never have happened.
    • Don't focus on your downloads for the first 6 months. Just focus on producing a good episode every time. The numbers will come. Be patient.

    98. Planning A Successful Podcast Launch With The RoShamBo Podcast: Season 4 Ep. 09

On this episode Jen gets to chat with Kim Drobes who is the co-host and executive producer of the RoShamBo podcast which features unique competitions and extraordinary competitors. Only ten episodes in, Kim's background in radio and a previous podcast gave her all the skills she needed for a successful podcast launch!

    Kim's Podcasting Smarter Tips:

    • Treat your podcast like a business. Set money aside to spend on the show, and come up with a launch plan. Kim and her co-host Ted each contributed $1,000 to invest in the podcast. Find out how they spent the money!
    • Plan a launch party! Not only is it a way for you to celebrate the work that went into starting your show, but it also gives you the opportunity to get friends and family excited, thank the people that helped you, and even attract your first fans.
    • Consider a long running Facebook ad. We aren't talking about boosting a post. Kim spent several hundred dollars on a long running, highly targeted ad through Facebook Ads Manager. But first, they produced a nice video using the Headliner App.
    • Kim and Ted also spent time creating a nice website on Squarespace. Check it out.
    • Having a launch plan also gave them time to work out mistakes. For instance, Squarespace was great for their website, but didn't work so well as a hosting platform. That's when they switched to Podbean. :)
    • The launch plan also included distribution--before officially launching, they made sure their podcast was in all the places--including Apple, Google Play, Stitcher, iHeart, Spotify, etc.
    • They also produced a lot of content in advance so they could launch their show and schedule their pre-produced episodes smoothly.
    • Kim wanted to produce the kind of show that she likes to listen to. Her episodes are highly produced, and thanks to her radio background, she has the skills to produce her ideal show.
    • Kim's advice to new podcasters: Just start! Starting is the harder part. Don't get bogged down in all the nuances and the desire for it to be perfect. Have a plan, make it happen. You can always delete it later.

    Surprise Questions:

Kim's hypothetical podcast about her life: Travel and Ping Pong

    Kim's fantasy podcaster: Her grandmother!

Kim's Favorite RoShamBo episode: Frozen Dead Guys Days' Coffin Race

    99. Jen and Vernon Spill The Podbeans On PodAds: Season 4 Ep. 08

Jen and Vernon are fresh from their experience at Podcast Movement 2018 with lots of news to share! After 5 years producing The Social Strategy Podcast, Vernon calls it quits and tells us why. He is also excited to announce the launch of his new podcast, The Space Between! We also learn that there is no shame in pod fading, there is only shame in doing something that no longer inspires you.

Podbean recently launched PodAds, and it has a lot of podcasters talking! PodAds was designed to help the indie podcaster monetize their show, and help the local advertiser reach audiences located in specific areas of the United States and the world. It's all very exciting and Jen and Vernon break down how it works, and encourage you to check it out for yourself.

Podbean contributed to Rev's FREE Podcasting 101 Guide along with Resonate Recordings, Samson, Podcast Engineering School, and Social Media Rescue. The guide is available on Rev's site--no email required! While you are there you can enter for a chance to win a podcast launch package with items from all the contributors, including a year of free hosting (Unlimited Audio Plan) and a featured spot on Podbean's App, from Podbean!

    100. How A Podcast Can Build Community And Open Doors In Your Profession with Jon Thurmond: Season 4 Ep. 07

On this episode of Podcasting Smarter, Jen is joined by Jon Thurmond. Jon is the co-host of the HR Social Hour Podcast where he and fellow HR-pro Wendy Dailey talk to other HR professionals about connecting, giving back, and building your network. Jon is also a co-host on the long-running Star Joes Podcast which is a show dedicated to Star Wars, G.I. Joe, and everything in between.

Jon's Podcasting Confession: Jon failed to hit record on his fourth episode with a great guest. Luckily his guest was happy to record again, and improve on his first podcast interview.

    Jon's Podcasting Smarter Tips:

    • Before he hit record for the first time, Jon and Wendy hopped on Skype and practiced so they could work on their timing and be confident that their podcast was professional sounding from the beginning
    • Jon knew there were a lot of HR podcasts out there already so he know it was important to find a hook. He and Wendy chose to concentrate on humanizing their industry and building community.
    • The HR Social Hour Podcast came about after Jon created a weekly Twitter Chat, #HRSocialHour in order to connect with other HR professionals that like him, were not able to attend SHRM, a large, annual HR conference. That twitter chat was so successful, that it inspired the idea for a complementary podcast.
    • Podcasters may want to consider starting their own Twitter Chats as a way to connect with their audience. Be sure to advertise the date/time, and attach a hashtag to it. Jon uses the tool, Wakelet, to capture the content from his Twitter chats.
    • Jon has benefitted professionally from his podcast. He even got invited to be part if the Blog Squad for this year's SHRM Conference in Chicago. This gave him the opportunity to connect with respected leaders in his industry.
    • His biggest piece of advice is to do our homework. It is easy to start a podcast, but difficult to keep it going unless you prepare by organizing your time, planning your content, and committing to being consistent.

Jon's Hypothetical Podcast About His Life: "The Professional B.S. Podcast"

    101. Paying Attention To Audio Quality Pays Off with Netflix 'N Swill: Season 4 Ep. 06

This week Jen talks to Dan Brenic, co-host of Netflix 'N Swill. Dan and his podcast partner, Caleb started podcasting after being inspired by their friends, The Epic Film Guys--another podcast in the Podbean Family.

Key Podcasting Smarter Tips From This Episode:

    • Dan prefers remote recording with Discord much better than Skype, and he tells us why he likes it so much better than Skype.
    • Use decent mics--Dan uses the ATR2100 (so does Jen!) #micbonding
    • In the competitive genre of movie and T.V. review podcasts, it helped them to specialize in Netflix programming, and it happened to work for them as active Netflix subscribers.
    • To market their podcast, Dan and Caleb use their Facebook Page, Twitter, and some Instagram. They also contribute to the community associated with the hashtag #PodernFamily. Twitter is working for them the best.
    • They are constantly searching for new ways to market their show in order to reach new listeners. He feels they can only go so far with an existing audience.
    • You are doing yourself and your listeners a disservice if you don't listen back to your podcast episodes. It is the most efficient way to improve your broadcasting skills, and speech patterns.
    • They are currently monetized through listen support via Podbean's Patron program and Patreon. However, their podcast is not dependent on listener support, but it lets them know they are doing something right to have it.
    • They got creative with their Patron rewards by coming up with rewards that engage their listeners by allowing them to choose what painful movies and shows they have to watch next. Fun!
    • Dan's most sage piece of advice to concentrate on good audio quality because good content doesn't matter if it's painful to listen to.

    102. Jen and Vernon Spill The Podbeans On Why Listeners Stop Listening To Podcasts: Season 4 Ep. 05

Jen and Vernon from the Podbean team, co-host this episode, and delve into the reasons people may be unsubscribing to your show based on unscientific data from a Reddit thread. After that they discuss more scientific data derived from the 2018 Podcast Consumer Report by Edison Research.

Podcasting Smarter Tips For Not Losing Listeners:

    • Make sure your audio quality is good. It doesn't have to be studio quality, but it should be pleasant to listen to and easy to understand with a consistent, level volume.
    • Unless you have a political podcast, be careful how much time you spend on your political opinions.
    • Listen back to your show so you can catch vocal ticks, mouth noises, heavy breathing--all things that can distract from yoru content.
    • Show your personality! If you are a boring host, your listenership will suffer despite the content quality.
    • Put on your positive pants! Being angry, ranting, and sharing a lot of negativity might be entertaining at first, but that negative energy can repel listeners.
    • Too many ads can cost you listeners. Sponsors are great, and we love to see shows attract sponsors, and even most listeners understand that sponsors help keep the shows they love going strong. But, there seems to be a tipping point when the ads start detracting from the content.
    • A couple we didn't get to on the show:
      • Hosts that constantly talk over each other are a big listener turn off.
      • You may lose listeners when you stop releasing on a predictable schedule.
      • Listeners get annoyed when hosts don't stay on topic and forget about what the fans are tuning in for.

Thank you so much for listening to another episode of Podcasting Smarter! If you have an idea for a topic, or know a Podbean podcaster who has something to share, please email Jennifer at [email protected]

    103. More Than A Few Customers Through Podcasting: Season 4 Ep. 04

Hey pod pals! After having the privilege of being a guest on her podcast, Lorraine Ball is joining me on this episode for a friendly episode swap! Lorraine is the host of the podcast, More Than A Few Words, a marketing conversation for business owners, AND a production of her marketing company, RoundPeg. Lorraine is a great sport during "podcast confessions", and is generous with what she has experienced and learned after years of producing a show to complement her marketing agency.

    Podcasting Smarter Tips From Lorraine:

    • Don't be afraid to experiment with formats for the longevity and success of your show. Keep what works and dump what doesn't.
    • Initially, her podcast allowed her to showcase companies she worked with, and they would often return the professional favor by mentioning her company on their marketing channels.
    • Live call in shows are a bad idea.
    • Longer shows are not always better. Her show improved when she gave herself permission to do a shorter show and to edit out the less compelling parts of a recording.
    • Know why you are podcasting, and let that direct all of your decisions.
    • She started including the podcast in RoundPeg's weekly newsletter and it drastically improved the open rates.
    • Her podcast has helped her land clients.
    • She now makes social media graphics for her guests. The images showcase them nicely, making it more likely for them to promote their episode.
    • More than anything else, have fun. If you are enjoying the show, your guests will too.

Lorraine's hypothetical podcast about her life: "Well, I Didn't Expect That!"

    104. Podcast Credibility Comes With Visibility And Reliability: Season 04 Ep. 3

On this episode Jennifer speaks with Chris Stafford, the President & CEO of  WiSP Sports Inc. which was formed in 2015.  Chris is a veteran sport’s broadcaster and journalist with more than forty years experience covering international sports and has reported at Olympic Games, World and European Championships and World Cups. Chris leads a team of women from around the world that produce and host 25 different podcasts reaching a global audience with more than 760 episodes covering all women’s sports and topics.

WiSP Sports tells the stories of sportswomen with integrity and respect while promoting gender equality, diversity, fairness and access. We celebrate women’s achievements both in and out of competition through articles, video, blogs and podcasts. As thought leaders we are shifting the narrative from a mainstream perspective of women in sport by enabling women to tell their own stories without bias.

    Chris' Podcasting Smarter Tips:

    • You want you guests to say, "Wow, I forgot we were recording!".
    • Chris passed on the mainstream sports and focused on the fringe sports that weren't getting their stories heard, and whose followers were hungry for the attention.
    • Chris was able to find a lot of knowledgable atheletes who made perfect podcast talent for her network.
    • While interviewing atheletes, she would often find talented hosts for her shows.
    • Chris describes herself as the narrow end of the funnel and still does the production for all the shows in the Wisp Network.
    • As they've grown, they have developed partnerships and co-productions with relative organizations which helps with attracting sponsors.
    • Although, Wisp began two years ago, Chris wanted to build a robust website with quality content and a large audience before approaching sponsors. So, they just recently started getting sponsorships.
    • Chris has a business plan, but it is always evolving so she has to shift as opportunities,  technology, and trends change unexpectedly.
    • It's hard to be patient when she sees the potential for the network. She would like a show for every female sport on the network.
    • Keep your antenna out or you might miss an opportunity!
    • The more visable and reliable you are, the more credibility you will achieve
    • Twitter is her best social media platform--this is where they get the conversations going
    • Do your research on the content you are planning and be familiar with your competition
    • Know your topics and book great guests
    • Know your voice--what it is capable of and how it changes throughout the day

    105. Podcasting In A Car Named Betty With The Podbean App: Season 4 Ep. 02

On this episode I get to chat with Lisa and Sam from the very fun and funny podcast, I Shake My Head with Lisa and Sam. Their show follows their friendship as two funny women in their mid 40’s who find themselves having some of their best conversations in the car! They have opinions and they love to laugh about everything that life throws at them! They throw a lot of great stuff at us in this episode!

Podcasting Smarter Tips from Lisa & Sam:

    • You don't need a fancy studio to produce a podcast. Lisa & Sam record from a car named Betty using the Podbean App and a Zoom H1 for back up.
    • Podcasting was a natural extension of their rich conversations they were having anyway.
    • The key to their podcast success is their authentic friendship
    • Do your homework and try to be something unique.
    • Be true to your vision, but not so true that you aren't open to constructive feedback. In the beginning they got some hard-to-hear criticism that they couldn't ignore.
    • Be part of the podcasting community. Join Facebook groups, and connect with other podcasters on social media.
    • Listen to your episodes and learn from them.
    • Lisa and Sam are very active on social media--Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Their most successful platform is Twitter, but they are on their a lot.

You can listen to I Shake My Head on Podbean, iTunes, Spotify, and iHeart Radio. You can also join the fun on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram!  Look forward to an episode every Friday!

    106. Journey Into A Podcast Network with Nate Phillips: Season 4 Ep. 01

"Do it till you are blue in the face. Do it when you don't want to do it. Be bigger than yourself." --Nate Phillips

Like many podcasters, my guest today is many things. Nate Phillips is the VP of the Journey Into Comics Network. He also hosts four shows including, The Voice Of Survival Podcast, Foodies Watching Movies, Journey Into Comics, and Journey Into Wrestling. You can find and subscribe to the entire network of shows at journeyintocomics.com.

    Nate's Podcasting Smarter Tips:

    • After losing an epic podcast episode due to his board glitching out, he is now super precautious and immediately turns the board off after recording so the file saves immediately.
    • Nate discovered that his strength as a podcaster was helping other new podcasters develop their talents and produce their own shows. This has helped grow his network into a diverse group of shows run by a team of dedicated, passioate podcast hosts.
    • Because it was easy and inexpensive, they started off by putting all the network shows on a single RSS Feed. As the individual shows have gained momentum, they are now in the process of giving each show a dedicated RSS Feed, and social media identities.
    • Their primary goal is to produce diverse, entertaining, and engaging content.
    • Nate had been fortunate in having committed hosts join his network. If that ever changes, he would understands, and would just ask that they have an exit show for the listeners. It's important that everyone is still having fun.
    • He pays attention to all the details of the content being produced in his network. If he discovers something subpar, he gently reaches out to the host or producer to help them improve for the betterment of the network as a whole.
    • Nate studies his hosts' speech patterns and is sensitive to an overuse of filler words.
    • Nate wants to continually learn while looking ahead to the growth and development of the network.
    • They are currently using Patreon as a way to monetize their network, and engage with their audience by providing early releases and bonus content as their reward levels. They are now close to having all of their hosting costs covered through crowdfunding.
    • You have to put the work in, and roll with the punches such as the time recently when he had to fill in for a host who couldn't make his recording time for his political podcast.
    • It is a rewarding experience to be able to work with a pool of people with unique talents. He also enjoys finding new talent and supporting them.
    • Podcasting takes commitment and dedication. You have to do it when you don't want to. Sometimes, your best content will happen during these times.

    107. Using Your Podcast To Market Your Niche Business with Norm Bour: Season 03 Ep.10

Norm Bour is the producer and host of Vape Radio (the voice of and for businesses within the Vape Space) and the founder of VapeMentors. Norm shares his insight as a business man who has found his podcast to be a powerful marketing tool in his niche. But first, we start with a few podcasting confessions this week.

    Norm's Podcasting Smarter Tips:

    • Norm recommends having a podcast as an adjunct to any niche business as a powerful, and multi-use marketing tool.
    • Norm admits he is not the most knowledgable person in his industry, but by interviewing experts in the Vaping industry, he has learned a lot, and become an authority by virtue of having a podcast that puts valuable information out about the Vaping business. This model will work with any niche business.
    • His podcast has given him VIP access to industry events because Vape Radio qualifies him as a member of the media.
    • Norm has also had the opportunity to speak at industry events all over the world thanks to the authority he has established in the Vape space with his book and podcast.
    • Norm stresses that it is important to understand your audience. With so much competition for attention, podcasts who find a specific audience will have success. In his case, his audience is Vape business owners or future business owners. By having such a specific audience, he knows what they need to know, what they are passionate about, and where they hang out on and offline.
    • Norm recommends podcasting about something you are extremely passionate about. Most likely you will not directly monetize your podcast so its important that you love your topic, and get personal fulfillment from your podcast to have any hope for longevity.

Norm's hypothetical podcast about his life: "He Never Gave Up" **This comes with a powerful story from Norm that will give you chills.

Norm's Fantasy Podcaster:  John F. Kennedy

    108. Focusing On Content And Distribution Before Monetization with Andre Kane: Season 3 Ep. 09

Andre Kane of The Electric Radio Show, a syndicated radio show and podcast. Andre has a background in morning radio that goes back to 1998, and he met his current co-host in 2001. In 2008, they started their own morning radio show on an FM station where they took the #1 spot. Andre loves the podcasting platform, and I loved chatting with him about his podcasting and radio expereinces.

    Andre's Podcasting Smarter Tips:

    • It was very important to Andre to be heard in every format possible in order to grow an audience as efficiently as possible. In 2014, Andre and his co-host saw the opportunity to increase the digital reach of their syndicated terrestrial radio show by making it available in the podcasting medium. In addition to podcasting, and terrestrial radio, The Electric Radio Show has used internet radio, a live streaming platform, to reach new audiences.
    • Don't be afraid to reach out to internet radio stations, to see if your show is a good fit. Andre makes the distinction between internet radio and a podcast by defining interbet radio as a live stream.
    • The long-term chemistry and work ethic with his co-host, Jack Hammer, and the rest of their team is a crucial element to their growth and success. Their combined passion keeps them producing consistent content over a significant period of time.
    • Andre and his team focused on growth instead of monetization. They focused on growth. Andre decided to concentrate on content and distribution before monetization. They are currently heard on 60 radio stations. He believes the money will come with an enthusastic audience and compelling content.
    • There is no reason an indie podcaster can't have a professional sounding show.
    • In terrestrial radio there are harch consequences for a drop in ratings. That means terrestrial radio broadcasters learned how to keep an audience engaged by teasing segments, etc. Podcasters can learn a lot about audience retention by studying professional radio broadcasters.
    • They are looking into expanding their show to include podcast-only episodes so they can take advantage of the freedoms they have in podcasting, but not in radio due of FCC regulations.
    • When you are syndicated, there are several monetization models.
    • Don't give up. Go into podcasting knowing that you will have failures because it is difficult to grow an audience and produce a good show. Both things take time, but if you don't give up, and concentrate on getting better, you will get there.

    • Arnie gained traction with his first podcast, Star Wars Action News, by reaching out to Star Wars collector web sites, and other Star Wars podcasts. Those relationships led to a fan base, as well as feedback on how to make their show better.
    • This first podcast led them to doing live shows, and hosting events for Star Wars fans. By getting out of the studio, they got to know their listeners.
    • Arnie turns down a lot of sponsorship opportunities because he doesn't want to endorse a product he doesn't personally believe in.

    • Growing a community around each of his network shows has played a critical part of their success.

    114. Listen More, Listen Indie with Josh Hallmark of #2PodsADay: Season 3 Ep. 03

Our first repeat guest is Josh Hallmark from the Our Americana, and The Karen & Ellen Letters Podcasts. We've invited him back to talk to us about his #2PodsADay campaign that has been gaining real momentum in the podcasting world. 2PodsADay brings much needed attention to indie podcasts by introducing two episodes a day from two indie podcasts from May 15th-June 13th. We also get lots of updates on his shows, and what he has learned along this fantastical podcast journey!

Podcasting Smarter Tips & Updates From Josh:

    • Josh encourages podcasters to treat their podcast like a business from the beginning if your goal is to someday earn a living from it. You have to pound the pavement and not treat like a hobby, or it wil be a hobby.
    • Rather than whine about the plight of indie podcasts and their challenge in getting the attention that commercial networks, celebrities, and public radio get, Josh started the 2 Pods A Day campaign. Check it out, and help keep up the momentum that Josh started!
    • For better engagement, Josh recommends incorporating yoru fans into your show. It means carving out significant time to give your audience the attention it wants anddeserves.
    • The Karen & Ellen Letters will start their second and final season in November. The show has been a whirlwind of surprises for him and his audience, and what he has learned in the process contradicts all of his intial theories about the four characters from the letters.
    • He almost gave up his desire to do a true crime podcast because he felt the genre was getting over-saturated. Luckily, he discovered a unique approach to the genre that will allow him to produce a unique show. True Crime BullSh*t will debut in the near future.
    • When his workload got too much with his most profitable show, Our Americana, he found a way to produce a different kind of episode that is easier to produce and will allow him to keep the show consistent.
    • He is so excited about his upcoming podcast which compares the stories of former public access celebrities with modern YouTube stars.
    • The season finale of the Karen & Ellen Letters Podcast will be performed live at DC PodFest in November!

Keep is with all of Josh's shows via the Our American Network. We can't wait to see what he accomplishes next!

    115. A Podcast Bridging Two Cultures with John Zhu: Season 03 Ep. 2

Today, I am chatting with John Zhu, the host and producer of the “Romance Of The Three Kingdoms Podcast”. John is on a mission with his podcast to retell the ancient Chinese novel, “Romance Of The Three Kingdoms” in a way that makes it relevant and accessible to a modern audience. With 800,000 words and nearly a thousand dramatic characters to cover, this is quite an ambitious undertaking.

"Once you get a certain number of listeners, word of mouth becomes a significant tool for promoting." --John Zhu, Host and Producer of The Romance Of The Three Kingdoms Podcast

    John's Podcasting Smarter Tips:

    • Being born in China, but living most of his life in the Unites States, John wanted to produce a Chinese-related podcast. After doing some research, he discovered there wasn't a show covering classic Chinese literature, and he saw an opportunity to introduce a significant piece of Chinese culture to a Western audience.
    • John was influenced by master storytellers he used to hear on the radio in China. He knew he needed to use the podcast to make the novel more accessible through good storytelling.
    • John takes 3-4 hours to write a script for each episode! He also provides supplemental resources for his audience like maps, and death tolls.
    • John learned that his voice and energy waned after 30 minutes, so he shortened his episodes in order to improve the quality of the show.
    • John listens back to his recordings closely so he can make his voice more dynamic. This means doing different takes to get the recording sounding the way he wants it to.
    • John tapped into his audience with online forums. Since his podcast covers a niche subject, he was able to find people in history and Chinese forums as well as Facebook groups who were interested in his subject matter.
    • John has also enjoyed spikes in downloads after being a guest on other Chinese-related podcasts.
    • Although John has received donations for his podcast, he has no plans to monetize the podcast. His rewards come from the creative outlet, and the positive feedback from his audiece.
    • John learned several new skills through podcasting that translate well to his career in media.
    • Before you record, consider if you will still be excited about your topic or premise 6 months from now. How will you keep going after the initial excitement wears off?
    • Don't rush to publish, but start recording now so you can work on getting better. Listen back and see where you need to improve. Once you are happy, publish.

    116. All The Makings Of The Next Serial with Josh Hallmark: Season 3 Ep. 01

Josh Hallmark is the podcast host and producer of not only the Our Americana Podcast, but also the podcast network of the same name. The Our Americana Podcast Network curates and creates podcasts that celebrate American storytelling, mythology, and folklore. It's also home to it's titillating new show with a quickly growing cult-like following, The Karen & Ellen Letters. The Karen & Ellen Letters are a series of real letters from the 1980s between a landlord and his two, naive and unbelievaby demanding young, female tenants. We discuss how the unique premise of this podcast has all the elements for Serial-Like success.

    Josh's Podcasting Smarter Tips:

    • After a six month road trip around America, Josh discovered podcasts (starting with Serial), and also discovered he had a story to tell about small town America. The yearning to stay connected to the small towns he visited, was what inspired his first podcast, Our Americana.
    • Podcasts give us an opportunity to have open-minded conversations with non like-minded people. We can use this to change false perceptions about people, and communities different than ourselves.
    • Josh's biggest obstacle is financial. He doesn't have the resources to record in a studio, so he doesn't have the sound quality he'd like.
    • Josh uses a primitive process for recording by using his iphone earbuds in his dining room.
    • Right now, he is doing all the recording, marketing, PR. editing, research, and production. He can work 100 hours a week, and it never seems to be enough.
    • Josh podcasts full-time. He hopes to continue monetizing through listener support. After he passes the $1,000 a month threshold, he plans to give back to charities that support the people in the small towns he has grown to love.
    • The Our Americana Network has three additional shows launching this year. Including a show that is hosted by a young trans woman, documenting her raw, non-political story of gender transition.
    • Josh has the support of his boyfriend who is 110% behind what Josh is creating. Podcasting without that support would be extremely difficult.
    • Josh is a bit nervous about the popularity of The Karen & Ellen Letters. Some of his listeners are rabid fans, and have done their own sleuthing to find the real identities of Karen and Ellen.
    • Josh has to work on taking on too much. He is working on how to incorporate help as he monetizes.
    • He doesn't think what podcasts are making in general is out of sinc with the amount of work that goes into producing a quality show.

I got the honor of representing Podbean at #PME17 along with Vernon Ross, the newest member of the Podbean sales team. You may remember Vernon from Season 02 Ep. 8. Together, we got to talk to hundreds of podcasters, participate in a couple of panels, and connect with an incredible community of creators.

We hope we can convince you of the importance of attending podcasting conferences. This is where you can connect and collaborate with other podcasters. The opportunities are endless! You also have an incredible bounty of education in the form of keynote speakers with a wide breadth of knowledge, workshops, and breakout sessions that cover a variety of topics to help you be a better, smarter podcaster. PodFest Multimedia Expo had a wide range of compelling topics, and dynamic speakers. What we loved most though, was the continual message of support and community that was communicated and exercised throughout the conference.

    118. Choose A Topic You Love And Podcast Forever with XX Will Travel: Season 02 Ep. 9

We go on a real adventure with Kathy Pulkrabek, the intrepid co-host of XX Will Travel, a podcast for independent, women travelers. She is also a writer, editor, and occasional performer in Chicago. Join us as we unpack the details of her podcasting journey!

    Kathy's Podcasting Smarter Tips:

    • As an avid solo traveler, Kathy grew frustrated with the number of people who thought it was weird for a woman to travel alone but thought nothing of a man doing the same thing. XX Will Travel became a way to find and serve a community of women travelers.
    • She is delighted with the support and collaboration she has found with other women podcasters.
    • Having a mission behind the podcast is empowering, and inspired them to create a popular "How To" series for women new to traveling by themselves.
    • Their first live show was a success and a failure. They drew a huge crowd, but the show failed to record. Luckily, they were able to recreate the content of the show.
    • One thing she loves about podcasting is how comfortable it is to hide behind the microphone, as an introvert.
    • Her goal when they started the podcast was to be able to travel for free. They are still trying to get hotels to treat them more like travel bloggers, in order to get accommodations in exchange for coverage.
    • Her other goal when she started the podcast was to learn new skills, and that has been accomplished.
    • Their podcasting strength is that they are experts in their subject manner. Kathy and her co-host, Inez, have traveled to more than 50 countries.
    • She warns new podcasters that your show will take a lot more of your time than you estimate.
    • Be prepared to spend limitless amounts of time on social media in order to connect with your audience and promote your show.
    • She advises that new podcasters concentrate on quality about all else instead of downloads. If you produce quality content, the audience will come and stay.
    • Finally, her best piece of advice is to choose a topic that you LOVE so you never get tired of talking about it.

    119. Investing In Your Sponsors with Vernon Ross: Season 2 Ep. 08

Vernon Ross teaches podcasters, authors, coaches, and companies how to find their voice online, behind the microphone, on stage, and in any situation.

He is also the host of the Social Strategy Podcast, author of Master Your Message, social and digital strategist and inspirational speaker whose insights are based on real world experience.

I met him at Podcast Movement 2016, and I am so happy to welcome my new pod pal to the show!

    Vernon's Podcasting Smarter Tips:

    • Vernon started his podcast to increase his professional authority in his business.
    • Through podcasting, Vernon learned self-awareness, and discovered his gift for talking to people and helping them tell their stories.
    • He has collected a number of opportunities directly and indirectly from podcasting including speaking gigs, a book deal, and a college teaching job.
    • Know who you are, and reflect that in your show. Knowing who you are and what you have to say will help you find sponsors that align with your message.
    • Don't worry about what other people think. If you have a point of view not everyone will agree with you, or like what you have to say.
    • Vernon landed A-list guests by asking when they weren't doing interviews and suggesting an original topic for them to talk about.
    • Don't let your fear keep you from starting.
    • If you are serious about podcasting, attend conferences! You need to surround yourself with people who understand what you are doing. You can meet Vernon at Podfest in Orlando in February, as well as me! Look for us at the Podbean table. :)

    120. 200 Episodes And Counting with Evan Harris of The Bearded Ones Podcast: Season 02 Ep.7

Do you dream of the day when you can say you've reached 200 podcast episodes?  My guest this week has accomplished that podcasting milestone. Evan Harris is an improviser and actor in Greenville, SC. He is also the creator and co-host of The Bearded Ones Podcast and generously shares his perspective after reaching his 200th episode.

    Evan Harris' Podcasting Smarter Tips:

    • His podcast is a prime example of podcast evolution. His early episodes were burdoned with a rigid format that wasn't working, and horrible sound quality. Luckily, they made the changes needed to improve the show, but it took some time to get there. Big Lesson: Don't quit, work on getting better, and keep going!
    • He and his co-host, Jason Underwood alway skeep their goal in mind: To always be entertaining and/or funny.  This means aggressively editing out any pieces of the show that just aren't interesting. Big Lesson: You need to edit your show
    • Don't assume that people want to hear you talk. They don't.
    • Evan and Jason both prep for the show by collecting notes, stories, and video clips prior to each episode, and collaborate prior to every show. However, they are careful not to over-prep so they can react to each other's contributions in an authentic manner.
    • Evan's only regret is not starting his podcast sooner. It's a struggle competing with A-D list celebrities with built-in followings who are now getting into podcasting.
    • Sometimes, it's like getting water from a stine when he and Jason think a topic or bit for the show will be great, and it's not workign out the way they imagines. He's learned that by doubling down on it, they often get to some golden content, and they can edit out the junk in post production.
    • There were some distinct peaks and valleys getting to their 200th episode. Two years ago they took a six month break when they got both busy and discouraged with their download numbers. And yes, it killed their download numbers until they recommitted to the show and decided to produce regular content no matter what.
    • Another strategy that helped their numbers was actively joining kindred networks and using those platforms for cross promotion and exposure to new audiences.
    • Evan pointed out that unlike traditional media, nobody can make you stop podcasting but you. In other words, anyone can make it to 200 episodes if they take the committment to their show seriously.

    121. Characters, Criminals, and Craigs List--Finding Fascinating Guests with Joe Cozzo: Season 02 Ep. 6

This week we are joined by Joe Cozzo of The Joe Cozzo Show. Joe is a comedian, podcaster, and criminal defense attorney who describes his show as a podcast about absolutely nothing and everything.

Prepare to be guilty as charged of being a smarter podcaster thanks to Joe's unique podcasting insights!

"If you aren't doing video you are doing yourself an injustice." --Joe Cozzo

     Joe Cozzo's Podcasting Smarter Tips:

    • Joe is always searching for people with great stories. He uses a combination of Craigs List Ads, his past criminal clients, and interesting people in his life like Crazy Robert.
    • His interviewing skills are a direct result of studying Howard Stern.
    • Joe is so passionate about podcasting he gets up at 5:30am to start gathering research and organizing sound bites.
    • Joe preps his guests through email and texts rather than talk to them directly in order to keep the interview as fresh as possible. He instructs every guest to be as real as possible.
    • Everyone is unique if you listen. The key is makign the guest comfortable so they feel good talking to you and opening up about their life.
    • Joe recommends Facebook as the best tool to market your show. He has an active Facebook Page and is considering a group. He interract with everyone who comments on his page, and YouTube videos. He also invests in Facebook ads to expand the reach of his episodes.
    • Although he has one advertiser on his show, he is still working on how to generate enough revenue to allow him to work on his show full-time.
    • The thing that bothers him the most is that he doesn't yet have the resources to pay his regular guests, and the people who help behind the scenes. This is a big goal for the show as it continues to grow.
    • Joe experienced a huge boost to his show when he started complementing his audio content with YouTube videos. He strongly believes every podcaster needs to embrace video, especially Facebook Live.
    • Joe gives guests his home telephone number. He strongly believes that the key to building your audience is building real relationships.
    • Joe uses a That-2 to record audio from his telephone.
    • Joe doesn't like to listen to shows similar to his because he doesn't want to be over-influenced.

    Joe's Fantasy Podcaster: Elvis

Joe's Hypothetic Podcast About His Life:  The Life and Mess Of Joe Cozzo

Good starter Episode of The Joe Cozzo Show: The Coney Island Coin Toss

You can listen to The Joe Cozzo Show on Podbean, iTunes, and True Crime and Mysteries Podcast which is on a mission to bring awareness and ultimately, resolution to victims of violent crime. She and her co-host Michael give victims a voice through advocacy and real investigative journalism, using their podcast.

    Rebecca's Podcasting Smarter Tips:

    • Rebecca had an idea to do more than entertain with a podcast. She now uses her podcast to act as an advocate for crime victims, and actively investigates criminal cases. She podcasts with a purpose!
    • As a podcaster, she has found that witnesses are more willing to open up to her as a non-traditional journalist.
    • She feels that more podcasters can and should use the medium to act as journalists to help solve crimes, and complement the work of police departments because podcasters are less constrained and more agile.
    • Rebecca is an academic writer, so she finds storytelling challenging, but her co-host, Mike helps keep her on track--especially when she gets emotional.
    • Rebecca uses a facebook Group instead of a facebook Page to connect with her listeners, and keep them up to date on her investigation. Her Facebook group members will even jump in and help pick up court papers when she can't make the trip.
    • Rebecca has a crowdfunding campaign as well as Amazon affiliate links to raise money to help cover travel expenses related to th einvestigation work.
    • Eventually, Rebecca and Mike would like to buy a travel trailor and travel around the country to help bring awareness and their investigation skills to other cases in need.
    • Rebecca spends 40+ hours a week on her podcast!

Rebecca's Fantasy Podcaster is Charles Darwin

Rebecca's hypothetical podcast abour her life would be called "Organized Chaos"

Please check out their investigative series on the Tiffani Streling Case. Developmens are happening through their investigative efforts that may finally bring closure to this case and justice for Tiffani!

On this episode, we are shaken and stirred by Mike Stojic, the host and creator of Make It A Double--The podcast that talks booze, spirits, history, mixology, and the people and stories that make them great.

Mike mixes us up a cocktail of great advice on this episode of Podcasting Smarter.

    • Mike invests extra time editing his podcast in order to tell a story in a creative, entertaining fashion.
    • He finds all his music at freemusicarchive.org where he selects the perfect music for the mood of his show. He puts attributes for all the music on his website.
    • Find your passion. Anyone can talk. but not everyone has a passion they can share that they enjoy talking about.
    • The best guests are great storytellers, and the best storytellers have a passion.
    • He grows his audience through his guests' networks, and by collaborating with other podcasters with sponsor spot exchanges and cross promoting.
    • He uses Facebook ads to promote his episodes and sees a jump in downloads when he does.

Scott shares what it's like wrestling with a podcast, and let's us know what he learned along the way to 100 episodes.

    Scott's Podcasting Smarter Tips:

    • Scott found a way to differentiate himself in the crowded genre of wrestling podcasts. To do this, he had to take his time launching the podcast until he figured out an angle to make his show unique.
    • The best money he has ever spent on his podcast was for better microphones. They now use Shure SM58 mics and pop filters for better sound quality.
    • They keep their podcast entertaining by adopting characters grounded in themselves while staying true to a wrestling theme.
    • They primarily use Twitter for social media. Follow them!
    • Outside of social media marketing, they print and handout fliers as people leave local music shows, and wrestling events.

    126. Small Audiences And Their Massive Rewards with Stacey Taylor: Season 2 Ep. 01

On this episode of Podcasting Smarter, I am joined by Stacey Taylor, a veteran podcaster from Birmingham, England who started podcasting back in 2007 when she worked at the world's most boring job. She is the host of Stacey's Pop Culture Parlour and Podcast On A Half Shell where she talks nerdy about comics, films, TV shows, books, video games, and of course the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. We have lots of fun nerding-out on podcasting.

    Stacey's Podcasting Smarter Tips:

    • Don't be surprised when people care about what you have to say. When Stacey's first podcast came to an end, she thought that was the end of her podcasting until some listeners encouraged her to start another one.
    • Podcasting helps you find other people who care about the same things you do.
    • Podcasting has given her the confidence to reach out to her heroes and to really get to know them by inviting them on her podcast.
    • Stacey enjoys a large social circle of people from all over the world that is a direct result of her podcast.
    • Listen back to your episodes as a listener without worrying about the stresses of recording and editing. It's a great way to improve your podcasting skills.
    • She prefers podcasts with more than one host, but only when they have a chemistry, and don't talk over top of each other. She wants to feel enthusiasm and passion from podcast hosts.
    • Know your niche, and carve out your unique space within it.
    • Stacy has grown her audience by being a guest on other podcasts and tapping into their listeners.
    • Advice to new podcasters: Don't expect a bajillion downloads right away or you will set yourself up for failure. Pay attention to and serve your core audience.
    • She empathises with her guest's need to feel comfortable. Days before recording, she asks if there is anything they need, or of they have any questions. She also makes sure to prep them thoroughly about the podcast topic and flow, so they can relax and have fun with her.
    • Prep, prep and more prep for your interviews.
    • Small audiences can reap massive rewards. A small, but enthusiastic audience can open doors, give you terrific engagement, and a very rewarding podcasting experience.

    127. If You Want Your Podcast To Stand Out, Be Different with Zephan Moses Blaxberg: Season 01 Ep. 10

This week, I am thrilled to be joined by Zephan Moses Blaxberg. Zephan is the host of The Year Of Purpose Podcast, and the author of the best selling book, Life Re-Scripted. He shares a lot of wisdom about podcasting with a purpose and standing out in a crowd. Zephan's Podcasting Smarter Tips:
    • When he first started, he wanted to interview remarkable people and used a booking service to get his initial guests. Once his show was more established, he started looking for lower profile guests with interesting stories that jelled with the premise of his show.
    • Podcasting helped him get comfortable in his own skin by getting accustomed to his voice, and growing a an audience.
    • At his first podcasting conference, with thousand of people in attendance, Zephan knew he wanted to meet a lot of people, and for those people to remember him and his podcast after the conference. So, he purchased hundreds of ear bud wire wraps with his show info printed on them. and handed them out at the conference. His guerilla marketing tactics were a huge success.
    • Use the technique of "Pattern Interrupt" to keep your show from being monotonous, and keep your listeners' attention.
    • When starting out, look at what everyone else is doing and approach things differently in order to stand out.

    129. Introverts Make Great Podcasters with Beth Buelow: Season 01 Ep. 8

“You can be a very charismatic introvert.” Olivia Fox Cabane

This week on Podcasting Smarter, Beth Buelow is here to help us get out of our heads and into being smarter podcasters. Beth is the host of the Introvert Entrepreneur Podcast where she helps introverts amplify their strengths so they can become better leaders and entrepreneurs. She is also a business coach, author, blogger, and a professional speaker. Wowzer!

    Beth's Podcasting Smarter Tips:
    • Introverts make great podcasters because they prefer one on one conversations, and tend to be the best listeners.
    • Due to the intimate nature of podcasts, they can be effective lead magnets for people with personal service businesses such as coaches. The podcast allows potential customers to get to know you, and trust you which makes it easy for them to decide to work with you.
    • Think of all the ways you can use your audio content. Beth re-purposed her podcast into a popular blog, and even wrote the book, The Introvert Entrepreneur.
    • Beth regrets not getting help with her podcast sooner because it could have saved her valuable time. She now spends $300 a month in podcast production help and show notes. This frees up her time to work with the paying clients that find her through the show! Smart!
    • By interviewing leaders in your field, and promoting their accomplishments you can create a "Circle of Champions" who will be eager to support you when needed.
    • Always stay true to the essence of your show even when you make changes to the format.
    • Beth uses TimeTrade to help with the scheduling of guests. She also uses a password protected form to collect details on her guests to save some research legwork. Her form was created with a Wordpress plugin called Formidable.
    • Introverted podcasters can find it overwhelming to attend podcast conferences so it's important to pace yourself, and practice self care. Beth suggests watching out for the "shoulds". As soon as you feel like there is something you should do, it's a sign that you may be making unrealistic assumptions.

    130. The Combined Power of Podcasting & Blogging with Abby Glassenberg: Season 01 Ep. 7

    "It's probably not great for your brand, as a blogger, to promise a podcast, and pod fade." -- Abby GlassenbergP { margin-bottom: 0.08in; }

This week on Podcasting Smarter we learn a lot from Abby Glassenberg. Abby is the host of the successful podcast, While She Naps. She is also a creative entrepreneur whose podcast is just one thread of a rich career she has sewn together that includes blogging, writing, sewing, teaching, and design. So impressive!

    Abby's Podcasting Smarter Tips:

    • Podcasting gives you an excuse to reach out to influencers and industry leaders in your field and connect with them in depth by having a conversation with them on your show.
    • Curating your guest list is an act of creativity. There is an art to finding a guest that will benefit from being on your podcast as much as your show benefits from their interview.
    • As a blogger, Abby already had an audience. She didn't want to make a promise to her audience that she couldn't keep, so she took the time to plan her podcast and consider the publishing frequency she could maintain in the long-term.
    • As the content creator, promoting your podcast is entirely your job, not your guests'. Make it easy for them to share the show by providing them with links, and visuals, but don't get upset if they never do.
    • To instigate engagement, she asks al her guests to share three things they are enjoying such as books, apps, etc. She then finds social media accounts for the things mentioned and tags them along with a link to the episode to let them know they were recommended on her podcast. What a great idea!
    • Abby uses the Pocket App and Slack to help her productivity. With Pocket, she can save articles that are interesting to her audience and include them in a weekly newsletter, along with a link to her recent episode. This allows her to provide tons of value without spending a ton of time. SMART!
    • Once your podcast becomes popular, you will start gettign pitched by potential guests. You need a plan for how you handle it. Since curating her guest list is such an important part of her show, she decided to not take any pitches.
    • Be patient with sponsorships. Abby waited to pursue sponsors until she was confident in her audience and the stability of her show.
    • She offers advertisers a lot of value for their sponsorship, and even includes several options for how their ad is delivered. One of those is a two minute interview! Another great idea!
    • You don't need a gigantic audience in order to monetize your podcast. After being turned down by MidRoll, Abby handled her own advertising with lots of success.

    131. Podcasting In The Moment: Season 01 Ep. 6

"The more we are willing to reach out and help each other, the better the world will be."

    -- Bruce Langford

Bruce Langford is not only the host of the Mindfulness Mode Podcast, but he is also a life coach and mindfulness counselor. Stay in this moment, because Bruce is going to help us wrap our minds around our microphones and be more calm, focused and intentional podcasters!

    Podcasting Smarter Tips From Bruce:

    • Three ways podcasters can be more mindful: 1. Meditate daily. 2. Use the power of habit and read the book, Power of Habit. 3. Make it a professional thing, and take it seriously.
    • Don't strive for perfection. 80% is usually good enough to get things done, and move on to the next project. Don't let perfection be your excuse not to launch.
    • Don't be afraid to request interviews from big name guests such as best selling authors. Be sure to do a little extra research, so you can approach from a place of knowledge.
    • Preparation is a way to calm to your mind in times of stress and nervousness. Be prepared, and have back-up plans in place.

    132. What Podcasts Can Learn From Books with the Well-Read Podcast: Season 01 Ep. 5

If there is a book that you want to read, but it hasn’t been written yet, you must be the one to write it.  –Toni MorrisonIf there is a podcast you want to hear, and it hasn't been recorded yet, you must be the one to produce it!  This week I am joined by Halle from the Well-Read Podcast. Halle and her co-host Ann, are librarians at the Beaufort County Library in South Carolina, and the podcast is an extension of the library's public outreach programs. These lovable librarians have reached over 150,000 downloads with just 35 episodes. Like a good book, you are going to want to check their show out! Podcasting Smarter Tips from Halle
    • Co-host chemistry builds over time
    • Divide up the show production duties for an equal division of work.
    • In addition to social media, and newsletters, she promotes the podcast grass roots style when attending community groups, or doing presentations through the library.
    • When they started, they weren't many shows doing reading recommendations so that helped them stand out.
    • To engage their audience, they tweet our what they will be discussing, share book-related news, and connect with authors. All things they think their audience wants to hear.
    • Podcasts are a great vehicle for community outreach for businesses and organizations.
    • Coordinating schedules is a challenge for them, so part of their work flow is batching episodes while still allowing time for research.
    • Like a good book, you need some sort of structure and narrative to your podcast.

    133. Podcasting To Advance Your Cause with Austin Petersen: Season 01 Ep. 4

"You've gotta think big to be big." --Austin Petersen

    Austin Petersen is the founder and owner of The Libertarian Republic, and the host of The Freedom Report podcast. Austin  grew The Freedom Report podcast into a popular, political news source which now earns over a million downloads a month. Austin credits the influence of his podcast for his former candidacy for the Libertarian Party's 2016 nomination for President of the United States. He came in second to Gary Johnson.  P { margin-bottom: 0.08in; }A:link { }

Podcasting Smarter Tips From Austin Petersen:

    • It can be dangerous to share how you truly feel on your podcast. You risk alienating people. You may lose career opportunities.
    • On the future of podcasting: Podcasts will be important in advancing individualism, and will take power away from mainstream media, and corporations.
    • Find a niche that is not being served well and hopefully aligns with your passion and/or your business. Don't do what everyone else is doing unless you can offer a unique value proposition.
    • With regard to social media: Think of your followers and fans as customers. Give the people what they want. Always serve your audience. Think about what they want to know, and what interests them.
    • Social media engagement has a dollar value of about $1.50 per thousand, so build your audience and engagement to attract advertisers.
    • Your audience will connect with you based on your attitude. What you put out there, you will get back.
    • You can attract people to you through your podcast that can help you advance your cause, promote your idea, or even marketing your business.

    134. Building A Podcast Kingdom with Rex Factor: Season 1 Ep. 3

This week on Podcasting Smarter, Jen talks to Graham Duke of the Rex Factor Podcast. Rex Factor is a light-hearted podcast reviewing all the kings and queens of England & Scotland. On each episode, Graham and Ali determine if the monarch has the mark of greatness, known as the Rex Factor! It all started with a pub conversation and a friendly debate about great monarchs. That conversation is now a weekly, award winning, themed podcast with over a million downloads. Graham shares with us how they created a community as well as financial support for the show through their creative crowd funding efforts. Podcasting Smarter Tips from Rex Factor:
    • Use your crowdfunding reward levels to create community. Rex Factor patrons become members of the special Privy Council and get access to premium episodes.
    • Your fans will want to financially support your show and you can do more for them with their funding.
    • Have fun with your audience. Rex Factor top level patrons get to commission an episode which becomes the premium content available only to the Privy Council.
    • They started an "insider" hashtag that fans use that references an episode about a monarch with a less than memorable mark in history. #RememberAed
    • Make sure you have good audio quality from the beginning.
    • Take the time to set up your website, determining your format, your work flow process, tone, and branding of your show before jumping into.

    135. There Are No Podcast Numbers, Only People: Season 1 Ep. 02

This week on Podcasting Smarter, we are recording from Podcast Movement 2016 with Shawn and Richard, the co-hosts and producers of The Language of Bromance Podcast. This episode was recorded using Podbean's mobile app recording feature and the Go Mic by Samson. I picked it up at the Samson booth the day we recorded! It's only $40! We purposefully left an interruption in the recording since it was part of the experience of recording during the Podcast Movement conference. Richard and Shawn initially started podcasting as a means to stay connected after moving apart. Now, two years later, they are part of the PodBros Network, and have a growing community of rabid fans who enjoy the hilarious worlds they create around obscure, historical events. "Always remember why you are doing your podcast. Praise is humbling, but that doesn't make me talk into the mic, it encourages me to talk into the mic." --Richard Must Listen To Episode: 84 Planet Of The Emus  (seriously, I laughed so hard, I cried.) The podcast has been an impressive creative outlet for Shawn and Richard. Their unique storytelling has led them to film making, and creating comics. Adult coloring books may even be in their future. Podcasting Smarter Tips from Shawn and Richard:
    • Don't be afraid to experiment with your show. Not everything will work, and that is ok. Keep creating!
    • Promote your show on Reddit. The community holds you accountable. You have to give to get in Reddit communities.
    • Don't waste your audiences time. They have lots of choices.
    • Don't be afraid to edit things out.
    • Create a community around your show. They have the L.O.B. Army.
    • Podcasting leads to many unexpected opportunities.

"One of the powers of podcasting is that you can make a difference." --Mike Rahlmann

    Mike's Podcasting Smarter Tips:

    • Mike recommends aligning your podcast with a charity to see the power that your podcast has to make a difference. The Be Our Guest Podcast will be podcasting for 12 hours straight on Sun. July 31, 2016 to raise money for Give Kids The World. Last year, they raised over $20,000 from their amazing audience.
    • The key to Mike's podcasting success has been community. He encourages us to connect with our listeners on a deeper level both online and off. His show has done this by organizing a running team, having annual cruises, being active and curious on social media, and incorporating listeners into their show.
    • Mike shares how by adding a live show into his podcasting schedule his team opened up a different kind of engagement with their audience. He uses a combination of Mixlr and Skype to make that magic happen.
