Lyrics
The sort of things that keep me up at night
Are whether my daughters will have a chance
To make this world their own
If we reach the point of no return
Before the dawn of a new light of day
Then it doesn't matter
The revolution was a lie
We focused on all the wrong things
And still ended up just hating one another
Just like before
Now I walk in the dusk of the post-war dream
Hoping that the next wave is more effective at making a difference
Mine just sort of lingered in the shadows
Afraid to rise against the crest of what came before
Content to survive on scraps from the table
Still shell-shocked by the cold war paranoia of our youth
Unable to shed these chains of tradition
Trapped and broken and dismayed
I figure it's normal to have this sort of existential dread
But rather than one primary threat like, say, nuclear holocaust
Now they seem to come from all angles
Disease, climate change, violence, misinformation reigns supreme
We all have our own realities and with each day
They become harder and harder to reconcile
And it's only getting worse
As we give ourselves over to algorithms and targeted advertising
Keeping our eyes distracted away from the one place they should be
Up
Our future depends on our ability to one day leave this planet
Eventually
Be it overpopulation, depletion of resources, or the effects of climate change
The necessity of our colonization of space is inevitable
if our species is to survive
But we aren't ready
When I was young the idea of blasting into space on a shuttle
Was an inspirational dream
Now, it's the reality of the rich
Billions and billions indeed
No longer an attainable goal for the hardworking and determined
Instead it is a commodity, a vacation
Meanwhile back on Earth the struggle for survival becomes even more desperate
Lulled into acceptance of the status quo by being offered "just enough"
Even though it has never really been enough
And the audacity to take more than is offered is met with disdain
Disgust, disenfranchisement, even death
The idea that somehow together we are greater than our sum is villainized
We are sold a lie and we are punished for questioning it
Not by authority, but by each other
By ourselves
It's the greatest con of all
Oh love light the way
In the night the stars that shine through time and space
Oh love light the way
A dream of life beyond the light that finds this place
