As I get caught in the throngs of pedestrians

Their eddies and swirls like the slow moving water

Of some rank canal

An entire orchestra plays inside my head

Lately I have been plagued with displeasing thoughts

I watch a man drink milk from a carton

Some of the milk drips down his face

Leaving pale streaks which branch off in the folds of his skin like a river basin

It begins to stink almost immediately

It is Tuesday today

It has rained for hours

The streets glisten with the footsteps of the crowd

Slowly the street empties

Draining quickly as if damned

A clogged artery

I walk with my hands cold and clenched

I sit facing a wall

A great big white wall

To me it resembles a page

A blank white page

And as I add these words to it

They seem like footsteps in snow

Each one muddying and corrupting

The purity of its potential

An empty street

And all I can think about

Is how my teeth are touching my teeth
