Main Topic: With over 900,000 sworn officers in the United States, more officers are experiencing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or a better term, Post Traumatic Stress Injuries (PTSI). Currently 19% of our sworn officers are diagnosis with PTSD/PTSI. That's a whooping 171,000 officers, but another concern is the 34% which suffer with symptoms associated with PTSD/PTSI but fall short of the full diagnosis. Here are some symptoms that will emerge: hyper vigilant, short fuse, not able to sleep due to nightmares, self medicating. So what is a post traumatic stress, is a mental disorder that can develop after a person is exposed to a traumatic event. In a use of force against an officer, such as being shot at, or a physical attack. During a serious attack, the use of force will seem to be in slow motion, were the weapon or the subjects hands appear larger than they really are. The brain takes over during the event highlighting the threat. Other factors also kick in, like odors that the brain also includes in the event memory banks. For days after the death threat the mind goes into survival mode, "Fight or Flight Response" causing anxiety. Officers across the U.S. need and deserve more, agencies should have a debriefing process to help the officers mental injuries not disorders. What's the difference, you can recover from an injuries.
