Memphis based, Louisiana born Simien moved to Memphis and began performing while in art college and soon after graduating established herself as a gutsy and charismatic solo performer with a smooth contra-alto voice, long before putting together some of the best Memphis players for the Marcella and Her Lovers band. In a flooded music scene Simien’s’ soulful style is fresh, lush and exhilarating. Informed and influenced by some of the most iconic contralto singers – Nina Simone, Amy Winehouse, Lauren Hill, Annie Lennox, Sade- her evocative vocals are equally hypnotizing. She has the skills of an established songwriter and writes of love found, lost and all the grey area in between. Self-discovery and soulful renewal.
