The Factory

The Oak Records label has long been famed for its popularity among collectors, and the Factory’s sole 1971 single, ‘Time Machine’/‘Castle On The Hill’, is no exception, regularly fetching over £100 when offered for sale to collectors. Different from the band of the same name that recorded for MGM Records and CBS Records at the end of the 60s, this UK band featured Laurie Cooksey (drums), Geoff ‘Jaffa’ Peckham (bass), Andy Quinta (vocals) and Tony Quinta (12-string acoustic guitar). Peckham was later replaced on bass by Steve Kinch. Before forming Factory the Quinta brothers had been part of the school band Perfect Turkey, who also recorded an acetate single (‘Stones’/‘Perfect Turkey Blues’) for Oak. The Factory’s single was issued in a limited pressing of 99, helping to make it one of the label’s most elusive releases. However, the Factory’s main claim to fame came much later in their career. They persevered without issuing further records until 1976, and were supported at one of their final performances by the Sex Pistols. The Quinta brothers and Kinch subsequently formed Head On, after which Andy Quinta and Kinch continued the punk connection by joining Hazel O’Connor’s band.
