First formed in the cultural hotspot of Hwange, Zimbabwe, Runya’s African roots are now finding expression in the creative seedbed of the south coast of NSW Australia. Through the rich canvas of family life, school choirs, church and new cultural experiences, Runya unearthed and developed his musical foundations in the golden hours of childhood. According to Runya, “Music has always been”.
With influences grounded in African gospel, rhythm, soul and pop, the life and vibrancy embodied in Runya’s electro-soul artform is a rich sound mirror, held up to reflect his constant wonder and curiosity, asserting the concept that “there is more than what is”. Each song is the product of lived experience, emerging to reveal an anthem that other musical ideas flow into. These central anthems hold melodies and beats effortlessly, giving a minimalistic effect of “carried sound”, woven as fibre, despite the meeting of old and new as stylistic influences turn on a coin throughout each song creating a diverse listening experience for the audience hungry for the new.
