Basic Scripture:
But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people , that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light (1 Peter 2:9)
Message:
1 Peter was written to the local churches which were confronted with an identity crisis. As the church’s influence increased, society became hostile to its beliefs. They were persecuted and consequently scattered throughout the Roman province of Asia Minor. Peter wrote to these churches to exhort them to hold fast in the faith.
As Christians, our identity in Jesus is described as a chosen generation, royal priesthood, holy nation, and peculiar people. This identity is based on the teachings found in 1 Peter 2:9-10.
1. Chosen Generation: As believers, we are part of a chosen generation, meaning that God has intentionally selected us to be His children and heirs through faith in Jesus. This term highlights the special relationship we have with God, who has chosen us to be part of His family.
2. Royal Priesthood: In the Old Testament, priests had a unique role in mediating between God and His people. In the New Testament, this role is expanded to include all believers in Jesus. This means that we are set apart by God, purified from sin, and called to live in accordance with His standards of holiness. 4. Peculiar People: The term “peculiar” in this context does not mean strange or odd. Rather, it signifies that we are a unique and distinct people who belong to God. It emphasizes our separation from the world’s values and practices. Our lives should reflect the transformation and difference that Jesus brings, showing others the beauty and goodness of knowing Him.
