Based on the new format, the prestigious FIFA Club World Cup will be held once in four years instead of once every season.

In the new format which will commence in June 2025, 32 clubs across the world will participate instead of one from each confederations.

On Tuesday, FIFA announced that all the clubs that won their confederation’s top tournament between 2021 to 2024 will qualify for the 2025 edition of the Club World Cup if the confederations have enough slots.

In the case of Europe, the confederation has 12 slots out of the 32 spots for the expanded FIFA Club World Cup. This means that all the teams that won the UEFA Champions League from 2021 to 2024 will be accommodated.

Based on this, the Chelsea football club that beat Manchester City to win the 2020-2021 UEFA Champions League title would take one of the 12 European slots

Recall that the Premier League side also won the 2021 edition of the FIFA Club World Cup under the tutelage of coach Thomas Tuchel in February 2022.

On the other hand, Real Madrid have automatically qualified for the 2025 edition of the tournament for winning the UEFA Champions League in 2022.

For the remaining slots, FIFA will fill them up using club ranking based on the same four-year period.

Only if more than two teams from the same country win their confederation’s tournament during the four years qualification period would there be an exemption to the restriction of two clubs per country.

The winner of the Uefa Champions League and the winner of the intercontinental play-offs between the other confederations will compete in the annual version of the club competition, according to Fifa.
