Before I start, I would love to give special thanks to @BoomLive for this special edition of Ladies First Campaign. It means a lot to me and I'm happy to be in an organization where women are appreciated and celebrated.
Each year, March 8 is observed as International Women's Day to celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women from all around the world. The day also focuses on a call to action for accelerating gender parity and setting agendas and goals in achieving these targets.
I thought our men will make comments like how they would want the government to push in more policies that support gender parity but hearing some of the comments from some men here, I sense some gender bias and prejudice against women who struggling in a society strictly dominated by men and doing all they could to break every glass ceiling to be at the forefront of every affairs.
As a strong advocate of gender parity, I support gender parity, I support gender equality and I write unapologetically that everyone has a role to play in Gender parity. Gender parity is the only path to gender equality. Gender equality remains essentially, a question of power, but to change the culture of male-domination and bring balance, we need equality in terms of decision-making, leadership and participation at all levels.
I support the motion that Governments should focus on policies to create a more friendly work environment for women leaders. Countries with quotas and regulations have achieved better gender parity on boards. Policies to remove gender bias at an early age in schools and an increase in access to education are also needed.
Parity means that each gender is represented equally. It is an instrument at the service of equality, which consists in ensuring the access of women and men to the same opportunities, rights, opportunities to choose, material conditions while respecting their specificities
Importance of Gender parity are not limited to Empowering women and girls which helps expand economic growth, promote social development and establish more stable and just societies.
If we want to break the vicious cycle of poverty, we must first start by breaking the cycle of gender inequality at its entirety. Gender inequality is both a major cause of and an effect of poverty and hunger. It is a vicious cycle that threatens the lives of women and children and results in millions of deaths every year.
We as a people must also understand that When more women work, economies grow and empowering women to work has benefits not just for the individuals, but also for the wider economy.
When women are active in peace negotiations, conflict is less likely to reoccur. Many of the countries caught in protracted conflict today are also countries that afford very few rights and protections to women.
In my country, women are underrepresented across business. They receive unequal pay for equal work and they continue to be targets of physical and sexual abuse. Additionally, women-owned enterprises are economically disadvantaged and lack equal opportunity to compete for business opportunities. Women also face legal and other barriers that affect their opportunities at work and as entrepreneurs.
Advancing gender equality in business is not only the right thing to do, it is the smart thing to do. Research shows investing in women and girls can lead to increases in productivity, organizational effectiveness, return on investment and higher consumer satisfaction.
There is a call to action! Gender parity is everyone's concern. Everyone who seek progress should support gender parity.
Gender equality is a fundamental human right. Women's rights are global rights and they are nonnegotiable.
