Nigeria
54
The Igbo tribe is one of the well recognized tribes in Nigeria. Here we'll be giving a brief about their two major traditional traditional hats and how's it's made, it's origin and what it signifies. Read along.
Name: Okpu agu “leopard hat” (a sign of bravery/warriors)
Style: Woven with white, black and red stripes (an abstract depiction of leopard spots).
Origin: Abia/Cross river region, from the Ekpe (leopard society).
Variation: Okpu mboko (black and white, worn by highest grade of the Ekpe society).
It's worthy of note that the Igbo Okpu agu has a lot to relate with the cultural Ekpe society of the Efik people in Cross River State. Very similar!
Name: Okpu ozo “Ozo cap” (Red cap)
Style: Red, study material, suede texture
Origin: Anambra region – sacred/earned, traditionally worn by titled men e.g. ‘Nzes’, ‘Ichies’, ‘Ozos’, ‘Ogbuefis (chiefs and kings).
Variation: Ugo (Eagle) feather on higher ranks.
Sometimes the opku ozo is referred to okpu isi-agu. The 'red cap' worn by Chiefs in Igboland represents authority, custom, and culture; and it likewise addresses the whole organization of administration, authority, and power in Igbo culture.
