2022 has been a fruitful year for afropop fans with new projects from titans like Rema, Kizz Daniel, Diamond Platnumz to name a few.
I’d love to highlight some of the top afrobeat hits making waves globally this year;

1) Calm Down by Rema

Without a doubt the best afropop single released this decade, Clam Down is an ear worming smash hit single that has brought vibrance and joy into people’s hearts since it’s release earlier this year.

Calm down is an addictive, refreshing, immaculate and timeless banger that has already eched itself in history as one of the greatest afropop songs of all time. The song has been a massive success internationally receiving over 80 million views on Youtube and 35 million streams on Boomplay. Rema wasn’t playing when he proclaimed this was another banger!

2) Buga by Kizz Daniel featuring Tekno

Buga has been rightfully inescapable this year being a feel good afropop banger that will have you going low low to Kizz Daniel’s infectious and catchy melody. Kizz Daniel and Tekno’s chemistry on this tune make for an enjoyable listening experience having every tom dick and harry on a chokehold to press the replay button.

Probably will the end year as the biggest hit of 2022 judging by the 648 million streams on Boomplay and over 11 million views on youtube in under a month.

3) Peru by Fireboy DML featuring Ed Sheeran

Fireboy DML and Ed Sheeran joining forces on Peru will go down in history as one of the biggest crossover hits in recent history joining the elite league of One Dance, Blow my mind and Somebody’s son. Peru just proves Fireboy DML’s melodic genius and his knack for catchy irresistible hits.

Peru went on to break love nwantiti’s record at the top of the Billboard Afrobeats Chart with 6 weeks at #1, peaked at #2 on the UK’s TOP 40 charts and has been viewed 85 million times on Youtube.

4) Finesse by Pheelz featuring Buju

Finesse is an instant smash hit that dominated airwaves in Africa before becoming a global phenomenon in the past few months.

The song’s lyrics although tongue and cheek have a liberating message against poverty, giving people the permission to enjoy life despite their financial status as the depth of one’s pockets is no one’s business.

Definitley one of the best songs released this decade inspiring, catchy, fun and humourous all at the same time, give this duo a grammy I beg.

5) Sugarcane by Camidoh featuring King Promise, Mayorkun and Darkoo

The sugarcane remix was the secret ingredient that the orginal song needed to be a staple meal on every African household over the past few months with Mayorkun delivering a show stopping verse that in all honesty is the bread and butter of this hit.

Show me your jigga let me see leaves rent free in my mind and I always rush to listen to this song everytime mayorkun’s voice rings in my head.

I’ll have to give props to Camidoh though for writing such a brilliant and iconic hit that has received over 22 million plays here on Boomplay and has been viewed 6 million times on Youtube.

6) Overloading by Mavin Records

This is how you do a label collaboration! Don Jazzy done did it again being the creative force that brought his Mavin artists together blessing us with this addictive jam.

This was an A+ group project in which each member did their part and did it well that I almost forgot Rema was missing on this collaborative effort.

Being streamed over 31 million times on Boomplay, it’s pretty clear we are yet to overdose from this song’s addictive and saccharine nature.

7) Kwaku the Traveller by Black Sherif

Propelled by titkok tales of making mistakes as man is to error, Kwaku the traveller has aided in propelling Black Sherif’s career to global heights earning him over 43 million streams on Boomplay alone.

As much as I don’t get this songs appeal I have to give it to Black Sherif for his songwriting and storytelling talent.

8) Mi Amor by Mario featuring Jovial

Definitely the best love song released this year, Mi Amor by Mario and Jovial has been inescapable in East Africa being played in weddings, funerals, clubs, public transport, neighbour’s speakers and everywhere you can think of.

Shout out to Jovial for being the cheat code to successful afrobongo duets with her euphonious voice that melts hearts often outshining the lead artist on the song (coughs otile)

With over 21 million streams on Boomplay and 14 million views on Youtube I think it’s time the Grammy lens lands on East Africa’s radar and give this song it’s well deserved trophy.

9) Last Last by Burna Boy


Burna’s latest offering from his forthcoming album Love Dlamini, Last last is one banger of a breakup song that will have you grooving and bopping to it’s reassuring tone and mood.

Last last has been streamed 14 million times on Boomplay and 16 million views on Youtube.
It also peaked at #29 onon the UK Top 40 being Burna’s first top 40 hit as a lead artist.


10) Mtasubiri by Diamond Platnumz featuring Zuchu

Mtasubiri is such a breathtaking duet by the world’s leading bongo stars, Diamond and Zuchu whose chemistry on the track is electric. The dynamic duo’s vocals blend seamslessly together in perfect harmony across the love song that is an ode to ditractors of thriving relationships.

Mtasubiri has received  over 15 million streams on Boomplay and 16 million views on Youtube trending on both platfroms since its debut.
