Stranger Things creators respond after fans spot Will Byers plot hole

Stranger things season four is in full swing, and after waiting a solid three years for the show to return we weren't sure how much we'd remember from the previous three seasons. Well, it turns out that not only are we as obsessed with it as ever, but our Stranger Things knowledge is like riding a bike - it's all come flooding back quicker than you can say Eggos. Some fans are even so clued up that they spotted a pretty major Will Byers plot hole in the brand new season. In fact, it's so big, the show's creators have responded to the goof.
In the second episode of the new season Mike comes to visit best friend Will and girlfriend Eleven after they moved away to California following the presumed death of Hopper. And while Will is initially excited to see his pal, he's disappointed to find that Mike spends most of his time with Elle. They are that couple, after all.
During the episode Will, Mike and Elle go to a roller rink where Will ends up feeling like a bit of a third wheel alongside the couple, and throughout the episode he looks to be pretty sad about it.
Well, the fans with the fully encyclopaedic knowledge of Stranger Things trivia actually came up with another theory as to why Will looked so sad third-wheeling at the roller rink, thanks to a moment from season two.
In the episode, all the way back in 2017, there is a scene in which Joyce tells Will a story about his birthday mentioning the date: 22nd March. Which, incidentally, is the same date that Mike, Elle and Will go to the roller rink for their awkward date.
So, fans are now theorising that Will might be sad about the third-wheeling, or he might be sad about the fact that nobody noticed it was his birthday. As in, no presents, no cards... nothing. Yikes.
However, in a new interview The Duffer Brothers responded to the awkward moment in the new series of their show, clarifying whether the whole thing was intentional or not.
The honest response is, clearly like the characters in the show, we also forgot about Will’s birthday," Matt Duffer told Variety. "So the debate now is whether we adjust Will’s birthday or we just let it be really sad."
He added, "You know how George R.R. Martin has somebody — I mean, his story is more vast — and Stephen King has someone who just keeps track of this stuff? We need that. We don’t have that. So Ross and I, and my memory’s not great, but we love Will, and I don’t want people to think we don’t love Will because we forgot — we do!"
The brothers added that they're planning to change his birthday to 22nd May, because the words are similar enough they can edit Joyce's speech in series two.
Either way, poor Will
