MANCHESTER UNITED SHIRT NUMBER CHANGES THAT COULD HAPPEN THIS SUMMER

Erik ten Hag was officially unveiled to the media as Manchester United manager last week.

Ten Hag has joined United on a three-year contract with the option of an additional year.

Ten Hag is tasked with overseeing an unprecedented rebuild of the club after United recorded their lowest ever Premier League points total this season.

It’s set to be the biggest challenge of Ten Hag’s career and he’ll need to get his recruitment right this summer.

There are multiple incomings and outgoings expected at Old Trafford this summer, while the club have already confirmed some departures.

United have confirmed this week that Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata will leave the club upon the expiration of their contracts later this month.

The pending departures of Nemanja Matic, Edinson Cavani and Lee Grant have also been confirmed.

That means there will be new shirt numbers available at United, so MEN Sport have taken a closer look at the possible changes:

Bruno Fernandes

Bruno Fernandes might change his number for next season because Mata’s No.8 shirt is now available.

Fernandes wore the number at Sporting Lisbon and he currently wears No.18 at United, which is a nod to his favoured number.

Fernandes is an obvious candidate for a shirt number change this summer.

Scott McTominay

Although Scott McTominay has consolidated himself as an integral first-team member at United in recent seasons, the midfielder still wears No.39 on his shirt, but that might change with Pogba leaving Old Trafford on a free transfer for the second time in his career.

McTominay made 37 appearances for United this season, but it remains to be seen whether he’ll play a key role in Ten Hag’s plans.

That means the No.6 might be reserved for a new signing — like Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona, for example.

De Jong played as a No.6 for Ajax for Ten Hag, despite wearing a different shirt number at the Amsterdam Arena.

Hannibal Mejbri

Lingard will leave his No.14 shirt number behind when his contract at United officially ends on June 30 in a few weeks’ time.

Hannibal Mejbri, 19, has been training with the first-team this season, he started against Crystal Palace on the final day of the campaign and he’s a possible candidate to take Lingard’s number. Hannibal is currently No.46 at United and is probably due a promotion.

James Garner might also have claims to take the number and Ten Hag will assess the midfielder in pre-season.
