Jordan Peele's Nope, Stephen King adaptations, A24 slashers, Cronenberg's comeback: The summer 2022 slate is filled with promising new horror movies.
Summer is not usually a time associated with horror movies, but a surprising number of the genre’s biggest hits arrived at the sunniest time of year. Everything from Steven Spielberg’s jaws to Wes Craven’s Original Nightmare On Elm street was released in summer, proving that horror can excel even when the nights aren’t so long or dark.Continuing this tradition, summer 2022 promises a slate of impressive horror releases. From genre-bending sci-fi horror efforts to comedic slashers, summer 2022’s horror lineup is nothing if not unpredictable. However, with horror heavyweights like David Cronenberg and Jordan Peele releasing their first movies in years, one thing viewers can predict is that summer 2022 will have no shortage of great horror movies.
The following horror movies are going to be released this summer:
Firestarter—May 13
The Stephen King adaptation Firestarter kicks off the summer horror release schedule in May.Firestarter is a remake of 1984’s sci-fi horror of the same name. Based on Stephen King’s novel, the story follows Charlie, a girl who is gifted (or cursed) with the ability to control fire via her emotions after a shady government organization experimented on her parents years earlier. A huge influence on Netflix’s Stranger things, the original Firestarter is an uneven, self-serious thriller with some undeniably striking moments. However, if the trailer is anything to go by, this Zac Efron-starring blockbuster will up the action quotient and add more gore to ensure that firestarter remake is a grislier, more impactful version of the familiar story.
Watcher—June 3
Not a lot is known about Watcher, directed by acclaimed newcomer Chloe Okuno. However, the movie’s terse synopsis says that Watcher follows Maika Monroe’s uneasy heroine Julia as she gets the unshakable feeling she is being watched after moving to Bucharest with her boyfriend. Isolated and unable to speak the local language, Julia lives in fear of a local serial killer as she grows more suspicious of her creepy neighbor. It Follows proved that Maika Monroe being stalked by an unseen force can make for a classic horror movie, so expect Watcher to bring shades of Repulsion, Don't Look Now, and That Cold Day in the Park when the movie arrives on screens.
Men—June 3
Speaking of protagonists being stalked by unseen threats, A24's latest horror movie Men promises a similarly disquieting viewing experience. Rory Kinnear, plays a variety of men who Jessie Buckley’s disturbed heroine encounters on a remote country holiday as she attempts to get over the death of her husband. If this latest offering from Alex Garland lives up to its trailer, Men will be an unsettling, cryptic nightmare of a movie that is not to be missed—or quickly forgotten—by horror fans.
Crimes Of The Future—June 10
The cast of 2022’s Crimes of the Future alone makes the sci-fi horror an exciting prospect, as the movie brings together Lea Seydoux, Viggo Mortensen, and Kristen Stewart in its twisted story. The plot, which revolves around a performance artist displaying his experimental body modifications in the near future, also sounds promisingly gross and satirically barbed. However, it is the fact that Crimes of the Future marks the legendarily infleuntial king of body horror David Cronenberg's return to the horror genre for the first time in twenty years that makes the movie an unmissable—if stomach-turning—cinematic event.
Nope—July 22
Visionary horror helmer Jordan Peele returns to screens with Nope, and fans hoping to go into this one with any idea of the movie’s storyline will be sorely disappointed. The enigmatic trailer makes Nope looks like Cowboy & Aliens updated for a 2022 audience, but knowing Peele there will be more twists, turns, and surreal satirical strangeness going on underneath this facade. After the success of the director’s last two entries into the genre, expect Nope to be one of the year’s most talked-about horror releases.
rauma's haunting after effects.
Bodies Bodies Bodies—August 5
A24’s Bodies Bodies Bodies looks like a more accessible horror release than the distributor’s usual fare. A slasher comedy, Bodies Bodies Bodies hopes to combine gory horror with sharp satirical wit as the movie tells the story of a group of dysfunctional frenemies who start to die off one by one during a remote weekend getaway. Whether Bodies Bodies Bodies will be able to repeat the success of the year’s hit slasher Scream 2022, however, remains to be seen.
