There are rules guiding pregnant women on the kinds of drugs they should use and shouldn't use. When a pregnant woman has sickness such as malaria and a headache, she can't use some of the normal drugs that we use.

This is because it can pose a threat to the growth of her fetus. When drugs are manufactured, they are usually tested on animals or people who volunteer before being commercialized.

Unfortunately, drug manufacturers find it unethical to conduct a drug test on a pregnant woman. So it's difficult to know which drugs are perfectly safe for a pregnant woman to take.

However, some drugs are safe while others must be completely avoided. According to WebMD, the following are some of the common drugs we use that a pregnant woman must never use:

1. She must never, either orally or through injection, take an antibiotic drug known as chloramphenicol. We normally take this drug to treat typhoid fever.

However, it can disrupt the normal functioning of a pregnant woman's blood and cause "gray baby syndrome."

A pregnant woman must consult her doctor if there's a need to use antibiotic drugs. Some of the antibiotic drugs we normally use to kill bacteria infections are dangerous to a baby's life.

They can damage the formation of the baby's skeleton and muscles and might later damage the mother's nerves. Some antibiotic drugs can cause rupture and bleeding, which can be dangerous to the mother and baby's life.


2. When a pregnant woman has malaria, it is her doctor who will prescribe the kind of malaria drug she can use. She cannot use the normal malaria drugs we use because they can damage the growth of her baby and destroy the blood cells of her baby.


3. She must never take a pain reliever, especially one that contains codeine. It can cause physical or psychological disturbance to the baby after he or she is born.

Pain relievers can cause jaundice, delayed labor, damage the female reproductive system, and cause miscarriage when they are overused.

A pregnant woman feeling body pains must see her doctor for a proper prescription of drugs to use.
