Vaginal Yeast Infection: Symptoms, Causes & Prevention

A vaginal yeast infection is one of the most common infections in women. It is a condition characterized by burning, itching, redness, and a white discharge from the vagina and vulva. These infections are caused by a fungal body (yeast) called candida, which is already existing in the body. This yeast infection occurs when its balance in the private areas is disrupted; the yeast rapidly grows and can result in a yeast infection.

This infection is also called vulvovaginal candidiasis or vaginal candidiasis. This infection is a type of vaginosis, which is a condition where the vagina is swollen, painful and creates a discharge. However, according to Cleveland Clinic, here below are some of the causes, symptoms and prevention;

1. Taking too much antibiotics medication or abusing such medication that’s treating an infection of any type. For example, a urinary tract infection (UTI) while treating it, can also lead to the killing of good bacteria in the vagina and this good bacteria was responsible for keeping the yeast in check. Without it, the balance is thrown off, leading to a yeast infection.

2. Pregnancy can also lead to it because your hormones can be all over the charts during pregnancy. This change in your hormones can disrupt the balance of candida in the vagina.

3. Using hormonal contraceptives i.e birth control


4. Diabetes can also lead to it because when you have diabetes, there is too much sugar in your urine and the vagina is impacted by this surplus of sugar.



5. Diseases like HIV or AIDS can also lead to yeast infection because your medications can suppress your immune system.

1. Experiencing an itchy sensation in the vagina and vulva.

2. Having a thick, white discharge with the consistency of cottage cheese from your private areas.

3. Experiencing redness and swelling of the private region in females.

4. Small cuts or tiny cracks in the skin of the vulva because of friable skin in the area.

5. Having a burning feeling when you pee or urinate.

6. Experiencing pain during inter-course

Stop the usage of bathing soap regularly in washing your private areas as it can kill bacteria that control fungus.

2. Try as much as possible to avoid the use of feminine deodorants.

3. Not using deodorant tampons or pads.

4. Regularly change wet clothing, especially bathing suits, as soon as you can.

4. Using water-based se-xu-al lubricants.

5. Controlling your sugar level as a diabetes patient.
