Encanto director Jared Bush comments on the movie's potential to become a future Disney franchise. The animated movie went from underperforming in theaters to one of the studio's biggest modern hits after finding an audience on Disney+, with momentum that only continues to build. Encanto is in competition for three Oscars at this weekend's ceremony, including Best Animated Feature.

The movie about the magical Colombian Madrigal family and their one gift-less member's mission to uncover what is threatening their miracle has proven immensely popular, with fans who have celebrated it on multiple counts. Connecting with its powerful themes and approach to representation, Disney's audience embraced the new characters as worthy additions to the studio's animated canon, and Encanto's soundtrack by Lin-Manuel Miranda is already one of the most successful in their history. Even as viewers prove willing to dive deep into what's already there, many are calling for the filmmakers to continue the story with Encanto 2, though there has yet to be an official announcement of a sequel.

Now, Bush acknowledges on Twitter that he is asked about Encanto 2 frequently, whether that be in the form of another movie, a TV series, or even a stage show. He notes that the Encanto team always wanted to start a larger franchise, but he offers no clear word on whether that dream is already becoming a reality behind the scenes. While some might be frustrated at the continued lack of official Encanto 2 confirmation, others might read Bush's comment as a sign things are going well. The movie's fanbase is incredibly active, doing everything from developing theories to making "We Don't Talk About Bruno" TikTok recreations, and in lieu of box office, the soundtrack's chart-topping success is a strong sign of a sequel's financial viability. If fans are really the ones making the Encanto 2 decision, a sequel is all but guaranteed.

Encanto composer Miranda is equally confident, though he has raised the same question Bush does about what form a sequel might take. While it might make sense to pursue another movie, a Disney+ series could be a great way to continue the story and develop some of the underexplored Madrigal family members. The extent to which these conversations are taking place behind closed doors is unclear, but as more of the original team address the possibility, Encanto 2 is looking more and more likely.
