Black Widow's Endgame Sacrifice Doomed Thanos - Theory Explained
Natasha Romanoff's fateful sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame may have been more crucial to beating Thanos than anyone realized, as one theory suggests. Also known as Black Widow, Natasha gave her life in order to retrieve the Soul Stone so her fellow Avengers could undo the damage wrought by Thanos when he culled half the population of the universe. Though the MCU films, including Endgame, continually failed Natasha as a character, she never once failed the Avengers, and potentially helped them win their biggest battle even after her death.

Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow, originally introduced to the MCU in 2010 with Iron Man 2, finally got her own solo movie, Black Widow, in 2021 - two years after she was killed off in Endgame. Set in the time between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, Black Widow served as a frustratingly retroactive farewell to the character as well as a backdoor introduction to Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), who is ostensibly Natasha's MCU replacement. Though her solo movie was good, it felt like too little far too late for one of the most important heroes in the Marvel pantheon and the only original female Avenger.

However, regardless of the issues with Natasha's story arc, it is undeniable that her sacrifice saved countless lives, and was truly heroic. Because of her, the Avengers are able to put the Infinity Stones back together and resurrect the half of the population that Thanos snapped out of existence. Additionally, according to one Reddit fan theory, Natasha's role in securing the Soul Stone may have also ensured the Avengers' victory over Thanos in the epic final battle at the end of Avengers: Endgame. The theory posits that the person who is sacrificed for the Soul Stone has some degree of influence on the Infinity Stones, and that the stronger a connection is between the sacrificed soul and the wielder of the Infinity Gauntlet, the more powerful the Stones can be.
In Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos forfeits his "daughter," Gamora, for the Soul Stone, as she is the only one he cares about enough to warrant a true sacrifice for the Mad Titan. Consequently, according to the Reddit theory, the Infinity Stones are acquiescent and responsive to his desires due to Thanos' affinity for Gamora, whose soul created (or at least was exchanged for) the Soul Stone.

If this is true, it would also explain how Tony Stark and Bruce Banner/Smart Hulk are able to use the Infinity Stones after their time-traveling scheme, and why Thanos does not succeed the second time where he did the first. This may be because when the Gauntlet is reassembled by the Avengers in Endgame, the soul sacrificed for the Soul Stone is not Gamora but Natasha, to whom Tony and Bruce have a much deeper connection than Thanos does. Perhaps Bruce's ability to bring back half the universe and Iron Man's defeat of Thanos and his army were only possible because it was Natasha's soul who earned the Soul Stone this time around - proving once again that Black Widow deserved so much better from the world that she saved.
