Sony Pictures Animation: The 10 Worst Movies Of All Time (According To IMDb)

Sony Pictures Animation, which is the primary animation division of Sony Pictures, has has been creating films since the early 2000s. While many of its movies have been critically successful, not every one is a winner. Being that we already looked at the best Sony Pictures Animation films, it’s now time to focus on the worst. To do this, we’ll be turning to IMDb.

The popular movie and TV show website has assigned every Sony Pictures film a star rating based on the votes of registered users on a scale of 1 to 10. This is what we’ll be using to line up the lowest-rated movies.

It’s additionally worth noting that we’ll be looking at both theatrical and direct-to-video feature films.

With the logistics out of the way, it’s time to head to the theater and throw some popcorn at the screen; Here are the worst Sony Pictures Animation movies of all time, according to IMDb.

10
Open Season (2006) - 6.1
Sony Pictures Animation: The 10 Worst Movies Of All Time (According To IMDb)
Sony Pictures Animation kicked off its theatrical releases in 2006 with Open Season. Though the film was a box office success, its reviews came in mixed-to-average.

The plot follows a giant grizzly bear named Boog who enjoys his comfortable, domesticated life. After rescuing a mule deer named Elliot from a hunter, however, Boog is sent back into the wild. Here, he teams together with the other animals to make the forest a safer place to live.

The film lacked uniqueness and loaded in the cheesy, over-used brand of humor present in most non-Disney animation at the time. This had Open Season falling short.

9
Smurfs: The Lost Village (2017) - 6.0
Sony Pictures Animation: The 10 Worst Movies Of All Time (According To IMDb)
Though Sony's 2010s Smurfs series always did well at the box office, it never managed to bring in strong reviews.

This 2017 reboot of the fantasy-comedy franchise has Smurfette, Brainy, Clumsy, and Hefty following a magic map to an enchanted forest. Though their adventure has Smurfette discovering huge secrets about her origins, it also gives the evil wizard Gargamel a chance to unleash his wrath.

Though many liked seeing Smurfette become a more fully rounded character, this didn't make up for the average animation and unoriginal plot.

8
Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween (2018) - 5.6
Sony Pictures Animation: The 10 Worst Movies Of All Time (According To IMDb)
The live-action Goosebumps film, based on R. L. Stine's books of the same name, received a sequel in 2018.

This installment in the horror-comedy series has two boys accidentally letting out monsters from an unpublished book called Haunted Halloween into their New York town. They must work quickly to stop the creatures from wreaking too much havoc.

Audiences found that the sequel failed to provide the same entertainment value as the original. Sure, it was fun, but its potential remained wasted.

7
Open Season 2 (2008) - 5.6
Sony Pictures Animation: The 10 Worst Movies Of All Time (According To IMDb)
Nope, they didn't stop at one.

After the financial success of the original Open Season, Sony decided to create a direct-to-video follow-up in 2008. This time around, the co-starring mule deer of the original, Elliot, is planning to marry the love of his life. After accidentally breaking off his new antlers, however, Elliot starts to reconsider the wedding. The gang is forced to push off the event after dachshund Mr. Weenie gets kidnapped.

Though the film wasn't terrible, it definitely wasn't anything to brag about. The animation and story were average and definitely catered to a young age group.

6
The Smurfs (2011) - 5.4
Sony Pictures Animation: The 10 Worst Movies Of All Time (According To IMDb)
Though Sony's original 2011 Smurf movie brought in lots of cash, it failed to bring in positive reviews.

In this live-action/computer-animated comedy, the evil wizard Gargamel continues to haunt the Smurfs' existence and finally figures out how to get rid of the creatures. Where does he send them? New York City, of course. Here, they team up with a Manhattan ad exec in an attempt to get back home.

Though the voice cast was talented, their performances were lost underneath a low level of humor, recycled gags, and a boring plot.

5
The Smurfs 2 (2013) - 5.3
Sony Pictures Animation: The 10 Worst Movies Of All Time (According To IMDb)
Yup, the direct sequel to The Smurf somehow did worse.

In this installment, Gargamel is out to destroy the Smurfs' happiness yet again. This time, he plans to do so by creating similar creatures that he deems "Naughties." However, in order to complete a sinister spell, Gargamel needs a real Smurf. This leads him to abduct Smurfette. The rest of the gang is tasked with tracking her down.

Critics once again rolled their eyes at the cheap gags and poor writing. Though the film might have entertained children, it failed to hold onto a larger audience.

4
Open Season 3 (2010) - 5.1
Sony Pictures Animation: The 10 Worst Movies Of All Time (According To IMDb)
Open Season received yet another direct-to-video sequel in 2010.

This time around, a circus bear tricks Boog into swapping places with him. It becomes up to Elliot and the rest of the animal gang to get their pal out before he's shipped off to Russia.

Reviewers were quick to notice how much of a cash-grab this installment felt like. Any artistry present in the original had been replaced with an easy story and subpar animation style, simply because it sold.

3
Open Season: Scared Silly (2015) - 5.1
Sony Pictures Animation: The 10 Worst Movies Of All Time (According To IMDb)
I promise this is the last one!

The fourth and final installment in the Open Season series reached its release day in 2015. The comedy has a former hunter, Shaw, trying to track down a werewolf that's gone loose in the forest. It's up to Boog, Elliot, and Mr. Weenie to find the animal first and put hunting season to its ultimate end.

This movie broke up the continuity of the series by erasing previous characters including Elliot and Giselle's kids and the domesticated dogs. The original voice actors were gone, the humor was lessened, and the boring factor was elevated. Not a win.

2
Surf’s Up 2: WaveMania (2017) - 4.6
Sony Pictures Animation: The 10 Worst Movies Of All Time (According To IMDb)
Though the original Surf's Up movie received a Best Animated Feature nomination at the Academy Awards, its 2017 direct-to-video sequel failed to keep up.

This mockumentary comedy film has teenage surfer penguin Cody convincing a group of thrillseekers known as the "Hang 5" to take on the biggest waves in the world at a location called the Trenches with him.

Unfortunately, World Wrestling Entertainment initiated the movie as a way to bring its brand to general audiences. If that was the goal, Surf's Up 2 succeeded. If the goal was instead making a quality movie, it failed. The original voice actors, Shia LaBeouf and Zooey Deschanel, were replaced in favor of a cheap marketing scheme.

1
The Emoji Movie (2017) - 3.2
Sony Pictures Animation: The 10 Worst Movies Of All Time (According To IMDb)
While's Surf's Up 2 was pretty terrible, nothing can compare to the critical failure of The Emoji Movie.

The comedy tells of an emoji named Gene who lives inside of a smartphone. Being that emojis are supposed to take on a single expression, Gene feels like an outsider for having more than one face. He decides to travel through the apps to find his purpose, eventually learning that all the emojis inside of the phone are in danger.

The Emoji Movie's humor, visuals, characters, voice work, themes, and more fell flat. This had it quickly becoming one of the most negatively criticized films of all time.
