He made his name with the Evil Dead movies, which showcased his talent for kinetic filming and dark comedy, but between that trilogy and his Spider-Man movies, he fit in a lot of interesting genres. This includes dark thriller A Simple Plan, stylish Western The Quick And The Dead and Kevin Costner sporting drama For The Love Of The Game.

Raimi was seen as an unusual choice to take on Spider-Man, given his previous credits. He proved to be an inspired choice, giving the 2002 blockbuster the stylized flair it needed while injecting it with a lot of heart. His first sequel Spider-Man 2 is one of the best superhero movies ever made, building on what worked in the original while deepening the characters and the themes. 2007's Spider-Man 3 rounded off the trilogy, with Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man squaring off against Venom, the Sandman and Harry Osborn's New Goblin.

Spider-Man 3 was a sizable hit, grossing nearly $900 million worldwide. However, its critical reception was noticeably down on prior entries. The sequel was critiqued for its overabundance of characters and subplots, and the lackluster treatment of fan favorite villain Venom. Raimi himself has since spoken openly about the flaws of Spider-Man 3 and how its reception affected him, though the sequel has attracted something of a fanbase in the years since. The superhero sequel can also be rented or purchased from prices starting from $2.99 on Vudu, Amazon, Redbox, DirecTV, Apple iTunes and several others. While Spider-Man 3 isn't on Netflix in the U.S., it can currently be found on the platform in the United Kingdom.

Spider-Man 3 wasn't originally supposed to be the ending of the Sam Raimi era, with the director developing a fourth movie in its aftermath. Eventually, those plans were scrapped, and the franchise was rebooted with 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man. Maguire would later reprise his take on Peter Parker for crossover event Spider-Man: Far From Home, while Raimi will return to superhero movies for the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. While fans still hope for a possible Spider-Man 4 with Raimi and Maguire someday, that's looking doubtful currently.
