The One Thing Disney's Animated Movies Still Don't Do As Well As Pixar's
Disney and Pixar have gone from rivals to partners, but there's one thing the former still doesn't do as well as the latter. Disney's animated films are currently on a winning streak, with its newest film Encanto, penned by Hamilton mastermind Lin-Manuel Miranda, being a huge success. The company is finally catching up to Pixar with its film quality, but it still lags behind in one area.
The company began making animated films in 1937, starting with one of Disney's best Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, which made movie history. Since then, the company has gone on to release animated works in abundance. Its films are constantly compared against Pixar's, due to the companies existing in such close proximity of each other, but there is one thing Disney still doesn't do as well as Pixar: sequels.
Disney's sequels, compared to Pixar, mostly fall flat. After the Frozen phenomena, it seemed the company couldn't fail when releasing a sequel. The sequel was arguably Disney's biggest attempt at making a follow-up film, and though Frozen 2 actually made more money than the first, it, arguably, didn't live up to its predecessor. Ralph Breaks the Internet was another big sequel that also failed to encapsulate the uniqueness and joy of the first film, as well as introducing plot holes into Ralph's timeline. The large jump from being situationally placed in the video game world to something as expansive as the internet resulted in the film losing a lot of its heart, and, overall, it isn't favored as much as the first film.
Disney's experience with animated sequels in the past has primarily concerned straight-to-home-video releases. Actually, the only sanctioned theatrical sequels from Disney concern the two aforementioned, and The Rescuers Down Under. Amidst Cinderella trilogies and The Little Mermaid prequels, theatrical sequels appear to be more of an issue for Disney animation. Comparatively, Pixar has made a plethora of Toy Story films, all profitable and largely praised. The Incredibles 2 was also successful, essentially primed for a Frozone spin-off, and Finding Dory was a strong movie too that corroborated the themes of the first film while further featuring something new. Disney somewhat cursed themselves with their straight-to-home-video releases, as they come across more as cheap cash-grabs, and didn't bring along the experience of making a good, worthwhile sequel. Pixar's sequels, however, capture the magic of their original films, being well-thought-out with a lot of effort poured into them.
Disney, unfortunately, hasn't grown beyond its reputation for straight to DVD sequels, even in the nearly 100 years it's been around. Pixar, though some argue it's now just a Disney+ studio, remains moderately successful in all its works, including sequels. Though its offerings have become better over the years, Disney still has work to do when it comes to the quality of its animated sequels matching its original releases.
