Marvel: 15 Best Animated Movies (According To IMDb)

Since 2008, Marvel has been the dominating comic book company on the big screen with movies like The Avengers, Guardians Of The Galaxy, and multiple Spider-Man franchises. When it comes to the animation department, it's DC who has been conquering since the 1990s while Marvel has mostly stuck to their live-action film and TV series.

However, Marvel has produced some animated films, and while many have not been as successful as the DC animation, for every mediocre title, Marvel also featured several surprising animated films that rivaled their live-action counterparts. Here are some of the best that Marvel's animation has to offer fans.

Updated on November 8th, 2021 by Anya Wassenberg: As IMDb user rankings change all the time, we thought it was time to reshuffle the list from its most recent version to reflect the new ranking order of the films.

Marvel: 15 Best Animated Movies (According To IMDb)
Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors Introduced A New Team Of Superheroes (2018) — 5.3

A new connected world of Marvel heroes first appeared in a 2018 TV Movie called Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors. It saw a new team form under Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel that included newly created characters like Quake, Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel, Squirrel Girl, Patriot, Inferno and Miss America Chavez.

The movie follows the global transformation of Inhumans that saw competing factions like S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Inhuman named Exile vying for new superpowered assets. While Secret Warriors isn't the highest ranked of Marvel's animation, it has successfully launched a franchise of movies, series and shorts that have continued to introduce characters like Ghost-Spider and Ironheart.

Iron Man: Rise Of Technovore Included Black Widow & Other MCU Heroes (2013) — 5.3
Cast of Iron Man Rise of Technovore
Marvel released a few different series inspired by anime that were based on popular Marvel characters like Blade, Wolverine and Iron Man, and 2013 saw the release of Iron Man: Rise of Technovore that followed up on the anime series and featured other Marvel characters like Black Widow, The Punisher, Hawkeye and War Machine.

Iron Man and his fellow heroes teamed up to take on Advanced Idea Mechanics/A.I.M. and the powerful techno-organic threat known as the Technovore in a movie that has a developed fanbase despite the relatively low IMDb ranking.

Hulk: Where Monsters Dwell Teams Up Hulk & Doctor Strange (2016) — 5.4
Marvel Animated Movies, Ranked
DisneyXD launched an animated universe of connected series like Avengers Assemble and Hulk: Agents of S.M.A.S.H. that also led to a couple of animated movies like 2016's Hulk: Where Monsters Dwell which featured the titular fan of smashing alongside Doctor Strange, Sorcerer Supreme.

Hulk and Doctor Strange joined forces on Halloween alongside the supernatural Howling Commandos in a movie that will likely impress younger fans of the DisneyXD series, though leave some of the adult fans longing for some of the other movies on the list.

Marvel: 15 Best Animated Movies (According To IMDb)
Iron Man And Captain America: Heroes United Is A Family-Friendly Adventure (2014) — 5.5
Marvel Animated Movies, Ranked
The Invincible Iron Man and the Star-Spangled Man team up to battle the Red Skull and new MCU villain Taskmaster from unleashing monster Hydra agents on the world in Iron Man And Captain America: Heroes United which featured Adrian Pasdar and Roger Craig Smith who both voiced the same characters on Disney XD's Avengers Assemble.

As shown by the rating, this movie is kind of a mixed bag due to having a very little story and a style of animation that can be an acquired taste. However, the actors perform their roles well and it is a short but fun action film for the whole family to enjoy.

Avengers Confidential: Black Widow And The Punisher Is A Taut Spy Thriller (2014) — 5.8
Black Widow And The Punisher From Avengers: Confidential
Trading giant superhero spectacle for more of a dark, spy and espionage thriller in which Frank Castle/The Punisher is drafted into helping Black Widow stop a terrorist organization from selling high-grade SHIELD tech that could potentially cause mass destruction.

It's a simple but effective James Bond-esque story with Jennifer Carpenter and Brian Bloom excelling as the two titular characters. The other standout aspect of the film is the animation: it one of the most beautifully made animated Marvel films ever made.

10
The Invincible Iron Man Told Tony Stark's Origin Story Pre-MCU (2007) — 5.9
The Invincible Iron Man
Before Robert Downey Jr. flew high above the world's expectations, Tony Stark's origin story was told through an animated film that featured him facing off against the Mandarin. The origin story is told well here and much like the live-action, it takes its character seriously and with respect but is not afraid to throw in Stark's cocky humor in there.

The voice cast stands out, the animation is eye-pleasing, and it has some great action scenes to keep one entertained. A shame that this one never got a follow-up with characters like War Machine, Ultimo, or Crimson Dynamo.

Next Avengers: Heroes Of Tomorrow Takes Place In A Dystopian Future (2008) — 6.2

With this one, it is easy to go in with l0w expectations with thoughts that it would just be a silly and goofy superhero romp starring kids but this actually takes a much darker approach to the Marvel universe. It's a dystopian future ruled by Ultron with many Avengers dead or in hiding while their children rise to become the new team of Avengers.

The next-gen heroes are all well designed and acted, the action is fun, and it has some cool twists and turns to see. Old Man Hulk is definitely a standout of the entire film, though it serves to highlight each member of the Avengers in some way and later leads to the young team's appearance in the comics.

Marvel: 15 Best Animated Movies (According To IMDb)
Thor: Tales Of Asgard Follows Teen Versions Of Thor & Loki On An Adventure (2011) — 6.3

This was the last of the straight-to-DVD line of Marvel animated films and it actually tended to fly under the radar for many fans, which is unfortunate because it is a surprisingly good adventure film about a teenage Thor and Loki on a quest to recover a magic sword.

The characters are all memorable, Loki is a shining star as per usual, and the quest itself is a healthy balance of fun, darkness, comedy, intrigue, and character to keep one entertained; when combined with great animation, it was not a bad way for Marvel animation to go out.

Ultimate Avengers II: Rise Of The Black Panther Introduces Wakanda & Its Ruler (2006) — 6.6
Cast of Ultimate Avengers II - Rise of the Black Panther
With all of the same cast returning from the first film, this one introduces Black Panther in his first film appearance. It was a great leap for the character. His story was told respectfully and the Avengers are all outstanding once again.

The film does suffer from trying to do a little too much in such a short runtime so it can feel jumbled, with some characters having little screentime. Despite that, everything that was great about the first movie returns for this one. Speaking of which...

6
Ultimate Avengers: The Movie Assembled The Team Long Before The MCU (2006) — 6.7
Ultimate Avengers 2006
Before Kevin Feige and Joss Whedon brought the characters to life in the major team-up film, Marvel Animation gave fans a film that, despite having a less than two-hour runtime, managed to introduce fans to a well-performed and illustrated cast of characters along with some exquisite action scenes.

Taking more inspiration from the Ultimate comics at the time, this was a new take on the Avengers that felt like a spectacle: every frame of animation is top quality, same with the voice acting. It also features a darker version of The Incredible Hulk as more of an anti-hero who takes on all of the Avengers.

5
Doctor Strange: The Sorcerer Supreme Sees Strange Test His Powers As He Saves Children In Trouble (2007) — 6.7
Doctor Strange animated movie
2007 saw the release of two Marvel animated features, with the aforementioned The Invincible Iron Man joining Doctor Strange: The Sorcerer Supreme, which introduced Marvel's strongest magic-user as he trained under the Ancient One.

After he earned the title of Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Strange was forced to test his abilities in battle with the followers of Dormammu while also investigating a mysterious case of children locked in a mystical coma. Fans were hoping to see a connected series of films launch from Invincible Iron Man and Doctor Strange, though Marvel Animation stuck to mostly individual stories.

Planet Hulk Lets Fans Learn More Abotu Hulk (2010) — 6.8

Hulk on an alien planet being forced to fight in a coliseum against the galaxy's toughest fighters and criminals? Much like the comic book story of the same name, it is a guaranteed hit. The Hulk is given much more development in this film and more of a performance which is refreshing and the characters are all well-done.

However, most people are watching to see Hulk providing carnage candy by smashing aliens and the movie does not disappoint. This is one many fans were hoping would get a sequel in the form of World War Hulk but this, sadly, never happened.

3
Hulk Vs. Sees The Green Goliath Take On Multiple Superheroes (2009) — 7

Two movies for the price of one: this is a double feature that pits everyone's jolly green giant against two of Marvel's most powerful and dangerous individuals. One story has him going against Wolverine along with some villains for good measure while the other story has Hulk being brainwashed to face off against Thor.

Character development and story-telling are not the stars of these movies; instead, it is better to just turn one's brain off and enjoy these characters battling in some of the most well-crafted action scenes of the straight-to-DVD animated films.

Big Hero 6 Brings A Lesser Known Marvel Team To The Screen (2014) — 7.8
Cast of Big Hero 6
Marvel and Walt Disney Animation adapted an obscure international Marvel team known as Big Hero 6 for the titular 2014 animated movie that introduced a reimagined version of the team in a high-tech fantastical world that became an instant hit that even led to a spin-off animated series.

Following the death of his older brother, young Hiro teamed up with his brother's robotic invention Bayomax and his high-tech equipped fellow students to discover the truth behind his death and the mystery of the dangerous man in the Kabuki mask.

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse Brings The Ultimate Spider-Man To The Screen (2018) — 8.4

This is probably not a surprise to anybody out there: this movie was a sensation when it came out and for good reason. Not only did it change focus to the underutilized Miles Morales AKA Ultimate Spider-Man character, but it was the first animated Marvel movie to hit theaters, adapting one of the most ambitious storylines from the comics.

Everything from the performances, the many heroes, the revolutionary and unique animation, the comedy, the action, the Spider-People—it was all considered to be one of the few times a movie can be considered flawless. It even beat out Pixar as an Oscar winner for Best Animated Film.
