Dreamworks' The Bad Guys: Every Crew Member Explained

Dreamworks' upcoming film The Bad Guys follows a crew of con artists and thieves, and members of the villainous team need some explaining. The group is made up of five anthropomorphic animals, those being Mr. Wolf, Mr. Snake, Ms. Tarantula, Mr. Piranha, and Mr. Shark. Although their names are simple, the characters are far from it, so here is everything audiences need to know about them before watching The Bad Guys.

The Bad Guys film follows the main character Mr. Wolf and his crew as they attempt to go good after a heist gone wrong. The movie is based on a children's book series which started in 2015 and currently consists of over 14 entries, with more on the way. The series has been wildly popular with young audiences, meaning that it is ripe for a Dreamworks adaptation.

With codenames clearly inspired by the simplistic names of Reservoir Dogs, The Bad Guys is sure to be a fun homage to heist movies throughout film history. Although the entire story is not yet known, by scrounging through the trailers and other promotional material, some insight can be gained into the characters and their stories. Pulling from that as well over a thousand pages of source material, here is everything that is known about the five main characters from The Bad Guys.

Mr. Wolf

Mr. Wolf from The Bad Guys.
Mr. Wolf is the film's main character and leader, using his charm and suave personality to pull off heists and evade authorities. He is a pickpocketer and peacekeeper for the team, often breaking up fights between Mr. Shark and Mr. Snake. Mr. Wolf also makes most of the team's decisions, finding missions and deciding how they will play out. The character is voiced by Sam Rockwell, known for his role as Justin Hammer in Iron Man 2. Having often played slimy yet loveable characters, Rockwell is the perfect pick for Mr. Wolf. Although his performance doesn't always match up with his ego (such as when he accidentally rips his pants off in front of the police), Mr. Wolf is always there to lead his team and make some money.

Since this film isn't based on any particular book, it's hard to say exactly what Mr. Wolf's character arc in the film will be. However, it can be seen from the trailers that Mr. Wolf is the first to genuinely start to go straight. Wolf seems to be doing a Jackie Brown-style double-cross, trying to convince the authorities he is good while also trying to convince his crew that he is still a bad guy. Wolf also has a love interest, a fox named Diane Foxington (voiced by Zazie Beetz). It seems as if Diane may be the one to bring Mr. Wolf over to the side of the law, hopefully leading to the entire crew realizing their wrongdoing and switching from bad guys to good guys.

Mr. Snake

Mr. Snake from The Bad Guys.
Referred to as the "serpentine safe-cracking machine," Mr. Snake is an expert and getting into places he shouldn't be and escaping trouble. Mr. Snake is often seen sporting a red tropical shirt, a look that seems to be getting more popular with villains like Kingpin these days. He also has a large appetite for money - or anything really. Snake is constantly trying to get a bite to eat, as can be seen when he spits out the hamster in the trailer. Snake is also incredibly selfish, which often gets him into conflicts with Mr. Shark, as is the case with the push pop debacle. Mr. Snake is voiced by Marc Maron, a comedian most known for his podcast WTF With Marc Maron. He also stars in a sitcom titled Maron, as well as having roles in television series like GLOW and films like Joker. Mr. Snake's personality seems to be as large as his stomach, and he is sure to eat up the spotlight in The Bad Guys.

Ms. Tarantula

Ms. Tarantula from The Bad Guys.
Not a lot of info is given about Ms. Tarantula from the promotional materials, sadly. Played by Awkwafina, the voice of Sisu in Raya & The Last Dragon, the actress is no stranger to bringing lots of personality to mischievous animals. Ms. Tarantula is the crew's tech wizard, with her eight arms probably giving her higher words per minute while typing than most other hackers. Although she admits that most of her knowledge comes from Youtube, she is a vital part of the team, getting the crew past security and into wherever they need to be.

Ms. Tarantula is surprisingly not a member of the crew in the first book, having been added to the team later. Beyond that, though, there is another significant difference between the versions of Tarantula. Gender swapping is common in movies like Eternals and many other film adaptations, and Ms. Tarantula is actually another example of this. In the books, the character is actually Mr. Tarantula, also going by the name Legs. This time around, though, the character is Ms. Tarantula. Although she is the team's smallest member, she is sure to be a big presence in the film.

Mr. Piranha

Mr. Piranha from The Bad Guys..
Mr. Piranha is the wild card of the crew, known for being brave and charging straight into battle when needed. In the books, Piranha is a literal fish, which leads to him having trouble getting around. However, in the film he is anthropomorphized a little more, being given legs. He is voiced by Anthony Ramos, known for his appearance in musicals like Hamilton and In The Heights. One of his defining character traits in the books is his love of burritos, something which has not yet been shown off in the trailers. Mr. Piranha loves being a villain, always sporting a big, toothy grin while he's with the crew.

Mr. Shark

Mr. Shark from The Bad Guys.
Last but not least is Mr. Shark. Although he is the largest member of the group, Shark is actually a master of disguise. The character got his name on the map when he pulled off an incredible heist: stealing the Mona Lisa while dressed as the Mona Lisa. Now, Mr. Shark is a member of Wolf's crew, using his skills to help the team blend in with a crowd. He is voiced by Craig Robinson, a comedian known for playing fan-favorite character Daryll Philbin in The Office. Shark often scares those around him away, so he is happy to have found a crew of like-minded individuals who accept him for who he is, meaning that he no longer has to disguise how he feels.

Although there are many other characters in the film, such as Diane Foxington, Professor Marmalade, and Chief Luggins, the five members of the crew are The Bad Guys' main characters. These animalistic thieves have lived a life of crime, and it is only by coming together that they can escape their pasts and finally turn over a new leaf. Mr. Wolf and these other beloved characters will finally make their big-screen debut in Dreamworks' The Bad Guys.
