Premier League clubs continue to splash the cash in the transfer window as they look to improve their squads.

Fees north of £50million are common in the top flight with rich owners desperate to reach the top.

20. Norwich: Christos Tzolis

Fee: £9.9m from PAOK (August 2021)

There will be plenty of people who know little about Norwich’s record signing.

At less than £10m, the teenage forward was bought for the lowest fee on this list from Greek side PAOK in the summer.

Yet to make an impression for the Canaries, there is plenty of time for the 19-year-old to settle in at Carrow Road.

19. Brentford: Kristoffer Ajer

Fee: £14.1m from Celtic (July 2021)

Kristoffer Ajer was always destined for the Premier League after five impressive years with Celtic and it was Brentford who eventually made the move.

A relative snip at a touch over £14m, Ajer was a regular in the opening weeks of the season as the Bees made an impressive start to top-flight life.

But a hamstring injury suffered in early November stunted the 23-year-old's development under Thomas Frank.

18. Burnley: Ben Gibson

Fee: £15.2m from Middlesbrough (August 2018)

When Burnley brought in Ben Gibson from Middlesbrough, he looked the perfect fit for Sean Dyche’s side.

But it was a move that went horribly wrong for the tough-tackling centre-back and ended on a sour note.

After only making one Premier League appearance, he was sent back to train with Boro before eventually finding a new permanent home at Norwich.

17. Brighton: Enock Mwepu

Fee: £20.07m from FC Salzburg (July 2021)

Brought in from RB Salzburg in the summer, Enock Mwepu already looks smart business from Brighton.

The standout moment was his stunning goal in the Seagulls’ 2-2 draw at Liverpool, halving the deficit after the Reds had raced into a two-goal lead.

Having turned 24 in January, the Zambian international looks to have a bright future ahead of him at the Sussex club.

16. Southampton: Danny Ings

Fee: £22.5m from Liverpool (July 2019)

After a successful season on loan at Southampton, Saints chiefs opted to spend big to sign the England international on a permanent deal.

And it proved a mightily sensible move with Ings netting 41 Premier League goals during his time at St Mary's.

The South Coast side were able to recoup their outlay when Aston Villa came calling in August 2021.

15. Leeds: Rodrigo

Fee: £27m from Valencia (August 2020)

Rodrigo was Leeds’ marquee signing ahead of their first year back in the top flight — but he is yet to find his feet in West Yorkshire.

Seven goals last season was a decent return, though he never usurped Patrick Bamford as the Whites’ first-choice striker as many thought he would.

The jury is still out on the 30-year-old Spain international.

14. Watford: Ismaila Sarr

Fee: £27m from Rennes (August 2019)

Watford’s transfer policy has led to more hits than misses in recent seasons but there is no questioning the success of Ismaila Sarr.

The Senegalese has shone for the Hornets, showing loyalty when the Hertfordshire club dropped into the Championship in 2020.

The 23-year-old was their top scorer in a successful immediate return to the top tier and looks set for big things.

13. Crystal Palace: Christian Benteke

Fee: £28m from Liverpool (August 2016)

Christian Benteke has made over 150 Premier League appearances since Crystal Palace splashed the cash to land the then Liverpool striker.

As a result, it has to be seen as money well spent by the Eagles.

Though never able to recreate his Aston Villa scoring form, the Belgian international has been a reliable servant under five different managers as the South London side continue to maintain their top-flight status.

12. Aston Villa: Emiliano Buendia

Fee: £34.5m from Norwich (June 2021)

Aston Villa’s summer of intent was headlined by the arrival of Emiliano Buendia from Norwich despite much interest elsewhere.

Financed by the sale of Jack Grealish, Buendia is becoming more and more important with every game he plays.

His wonderful turn and pass to set up Danny Ings' opener at Brentford recently showed promise and he could thrive under the tutelage of Steven Gerrard.

11. Wolves: Fabio Silva

Fee: £36m from Porto (September 2020)

Wolves opened their chequebook to acquire the services of Fabio Silva back in September 2020, when he was aged just 18 and had only played 21 games for Porto.

The youngster was highly rated but it was a large fee for someone so unproven.

Silva is an investment for the future, who will hopefully benefit from working under fellow Portuguese Bruno Lage.

10. Newcastle: Joelinton

Fee: £39.6m from Hoffenheim (July 2019)

Signed as a striker, Joelinton scored just six goals in his first two seasons at St James' Park.

The Brazilian has never looked worth the cash the Magpies spent on him and has struggled in a poor side.

His work rate means the Geordie faithful have never turned on him and recent displays in midfield have shown there may be life in him yet.

9. Leicester: Youri Tielemans

Fee: £40.5m from Monaco (July 2019)

One of the best transfers in recent Premier League history was Leicester's purchase of Youri Tielemans.

The Belgian had impressed in half a season on loan from Monaco and has only got better since then.

Always linked with Europe’s biggest clubs, Tielemans wrote his name into Foxes folklore when he netted the winning goal against Chelsea in the 2021 FA Cup final.

8. West Ham: Sebastien Haller

Fee: £45m from Eintracht Frankfurt (July 2019)

Ivory Coast international Sebastien Haller spent 18 relatively unhappy months at West Ham before moving to Ajax.

He scored 10 times in 48 league games for the Hammers but never won over the supporters at the London Stadium, with the much more mobile Michail Antonio clearly a better option.

Few would have foreseen Haller going on to break a number of Champions League records at his new employers, scoring 10 goals in their group stage campaign this term.

7. Everton: Richarlison

Fee: £50m from Watford (July 2018)

Eyebrows were raised when Everton brokered a big-money deal to bring Richarlison to Goodison Park, initially for a fee of £35.2m.

But the former Watford forward has shown real quality on Merseyside, despite a tumultuous few years for the club.

Still aged just 24, and with a number of European giants keeping tabs on the Brazilian, the Toffees could yet make a profit in the future.

6. Tottenham: Tanguy Ndombele

Fee: £55m from Lyon (July 2019)

Tanguy Ndombele was one of the hottest Ligue 1 properties when Tottenham signed the marauding midfielder but the 25-year-old has failed to live up to the hype.

Brought in as a replacement for the China-bound Mousa Demeble, Ndombele looked to have the skillset to make him a Premier League hit.

But he was booed off the pitch for Spurs against Morecambe in the FA Cup and an unwillingness to do the dirty work means he could well leave this January.

5. Arsenal: Nicolas Pepe

Fee: £72m from Lille (August 2019)

Another former Ligue 1 starlet, Nicolas Pepe has flattered to deceive as an Arsenal player.

Then Gunners boss Unai Emery broke the bank to land the Lille sensation but the winger has often struggled to make his mark at the Emirates.

As academy products Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe continue to shine, Pepe looks destined to be a expensive flop.

4. Liverpool: Virgil van Dijk

Fee: £76.1m from Southampton (January 2018)

After a lengthy pursuit, Liverpool finally sealed the deal for Virgil van Dijk on January 1, 2018.

The Dutch centre-back has been a colossus for the Reds since his arrival, helping them to a sixth Champions League and first league title in a generation.

Of all the record signings on this list, Van Dijk’s transfer may have been the most transformative of the lot. 

3. Manchester United: Paul Pogba

Fee: £94.5m from Juventus (August 2016)

After four years away from Old Trafford, Paul Pogba returned for a hefty fee in the summer of 2016.

But the Manchester United midfielder has never proven his worth in a string of inconsistent seasons in the Premier League.

Out of contract at the end of this campaign, the World Cup winner has not met the levels expected of their creative spark.

2. Chelsea: Romelu Lukaku

Fee: £97.5m from Inter Milan (August 2021)

Like United, Chelsea splashed the cash on a former player to break their transfer record.

Inter Milan’s financial issues made Romelu Lukaku a viable target and the Blues pounced to get their man.

But his recent comments about missing his time in Italy have not helped relations and yet to find his goalscoring boots at Stamford Bridge, the Belgian international still needs to justify the fee.

1. Manchester City: Jack Grealish

Fee: £100m from Aston Villa (August 2021)

Not only is Jack Grealish the most expensive player in Premier League history, he is also the most expensive Englishman.

After a summer which saw him star at Euro 2020 and his value increase, it has not all be plain sailing for the former Villa captain.

Grealish has had difficulties adapting to Pep Guardiola’s style of play but has shown promising signs of what is still to come.
