2021 has undoubtedly been an exceptional year for Nigerian Music Industry, and it has seen the rise of new and young artistes. A remarkable few went on tours around the world, sold out shows in massive locations and even gained international recognition for their hard work and contribution to the growth of the Nigerian music industry.
Nigerian artistes really took it up a notch last year and showed the world what it truly means to be the Giant of Africa.
Some of these artistes include;
1. Tems
Tems is one of the fastest rising acts out of Africa and the song Essence, featuring her, also became the first Nigerian song to spend a year on Billboard World Album charts.
She rose like a phoenix alongside Wizkid who made history by becoming the first African artiste to sell out the 02 Arena in England three times [within minutes] in under a month as well as enter the Billboard Top 10 charts for his global hit song ‘Essence’.
2. Burna boy
Without a doubt and by any measuring standard, Damini Ogulu better known by his stage name Burna Boy has had an amazing year and to this effect fans have gone ahead to dub 2021 “the year of Burna” because he achieved unparalleled success by winning the Grammy Award.
Burna Boy completed a rigorous global tour and winning his first Grammy all in the same year.
3. Davido
He is one of the biggest artists out of Africa and a major player in the Nigerian music scene. He is also one of the highest earning celebrities in the country. From record sales, streaming and endorsement deals, the music star sure had a great 2021.
In December, he secured a major endorsement deal with sports company Puma. Though the exact figures of the deal were not declared, reports revealed that the singer’s endorsement ran into millions of dollars. Davido has definitely had a remarkable year and we’re anxiously anticipating what he pulls off next.
4. Wizkid
Wizkid doesn’t need much introduction to the average Nigerian. He has been very active in the global music scene recently and has won multiple awards and gotten recognition for his dynamic performance and ability to do justice to any beat or collaboration.
Wizkid also won the Best African Act at the 2021 MTV EMA Awards. This comes days after Big Wiz coveted five nominations at the 2021 BET Soul Train Awards.
Wizkid has had a streak of wins in 2021, especially with his "Made in Lagos" album that recorded over 100 million streams on Apple music. The song Essence, featuring Tems, also became the first Nigerian album to spend a year on Billboard World Album charts.
5. Tiwa savage
She has been around for a while and is very much embedded in the Nigerian music scene as you cannot list the top female artists and leave out Tiwa Savage. Her talent and passion during performances are unmatched and the audience deeply connects with her on that level.
Tiwa Savage is still reeling off the excitement of her released E.P, "Water and Garri" and smash-hit single "Somebody Son" in 2021. With a career spanning over a decade, Tiwa will build on the success of past editions of Livespot360’s produced concerts featuring Kim Kardashian, Ciara, Cardi B and more.
She has truly been a force to reckon with and we can’t wait to see what the new year has in store for her.
