Top 10 Worst Songs of 2021
Being there is always room for improvement I feel the need to point out some of the weak or borderline terrible songs my faves have released this year. Before you devour me in three comments remember I’m writing this article on a cracked screen of my ever hanging 16gb oppo with okoa bundles as my internet source while your favourite artist is catching flights on private jets sipping wine worth my yearly rent. Relax this is just my opinion it’s not factual take it with a grain of salt.
Here are my worst songs of 2021;
1) Permission to Dance by BTS
BTS is the biggest act/group in the world with a massive and dedicated fanbase, known as the army, which is always willing and ready to consume anything their idols put out. Knowing the power they hold in today’s music landscape has made BTS complacent and comfortable always repackaging the same pop song every year for their army to mass buy.
PTD is an outdated generic pop song with basic lyrics, giving very much Disney channel soundtrack, the song is very forgettable with little to no replay value. This is one of the weakest efforts by Ed Sheeran as a songwriter only proving BTS should stop receiving fully written songs to perform and have a hand in creating these songs.
2) Thot Sh!t by Megan Thee Stallion.
Megan is never beating the one trick pony allegations if she keeps repackaging the same song over and over again. Thot Shit feels like something we’ve heard from Megan before, from the subject matter to the beat to the delivery the song lacks creativity and ambition.
Thot shit is the definition of tiktok music as we could tell she made it for a cute little 60 seconds choreo chasing virality.
Megan’s performance on some of the verses was commendable with notable witty bars like “No, I’m not a patient, but I let him treat me/I gotta be a doctor how I’m orderin’ CCs” making the grammy nomination less controversial.
3) Brutal Olivia by Olivia Rodrigo
Hurts my soul to come for Olivia cause I genuinely love Sour, I think it’s definitely one of the greatest debut albums of all time and definitely top 5 in 2021.
However Brutal the opening track of Sour leaves much to be desired with a heavy base guitar that feels like noise from a wannabe next door rock band.
I would have looked the other way if this wasn't the opening track of the album as it kills the mood of listening to the album from the first second.
4) Imagine by Doja Cat
Planet Her was so close to being a 10/10 album then here comes Imagine to ruin the perfect streak. The production is bottom tier with the beat sounding like those annoying video game sounds that you can’t get out of your head and Doja does nothing vocally or lyrically to save this song from being a total mess.
I just wanna know who in RCA approved this song to make the final cut of the album?
5) Boyz by Jesy Nelson ft Nicki Minaj
Blackfishing aside this song ain’t it. Boyz samples a hip hop classic but does it in a cringeworthy wannabe route that has most of us rolling our eyes. Nicki’s verse was nothing special we’ve heard nicki go harder on remixes. Republic Records needs to go back to the drawing board cause marketing Jesy as a racially ambiguous baddie deeply biting of black culture ain’t working.
6) Sip It by Iggy Azalea
Sip It is the lead single from Iggy’s latest album, The End of An Era, which is supposed to mark her retirement from the music industry.
Sip It tries and fails to recreate the magic of the duo’s 2018 hit Kream, it lacks the creativity, effort and delivery that got everyone and their mom twerking to Kream.
Sip It is a lazy predictable and generic song that should have been scrapped.
7) Motley Crew
For once in his career Post Malone didn’t understand the assignment. How he went from creating timeless classics like the diamond certified sunflower and record breaking Circles to motley crew is a mystery.
Motley Crew has a cookie cutter trap beat we’ve come to expect from a migos or tyga who aren’t necessarily A1 songwriters like Posty but know how to create a catchy hook for a club anthem.
Post Malone should stick to what he does best, pop rap anthems like one right now which is already smashing.
8) Obsessed by Addison Rae
Artists like Addsion Rae are the reason tiktok is heavily scrutinized for ‘ruining’ the music industry when in reality it has done more good than harm.
Obsessed is A bland, basic and lifeless pop song that hides behind auto tune and expensive production which does nothing to conceal the lack of talent and soul. The lyrics are quite cringe and self indulgent lacking relatability or merit.
Addison is a cute girl who white privilege might have allowed her to smile nod and get millions of likes on tiktok but the music industry requires more than that.
9) Let them Know by Mabel
Mabel is one of the best pop stars in the game right now, her debut album High expectations is filled with nonstop bangers from top to bottom but her recent releases deflect from the niche she carved out for herself so well in the industry.
Let Them Know feels outdated production wise with the sound being very reminiscent of the 2010s edm era, Mabel lacks the personality and edge that a lady gaga would have to make this song even remotely digestible. I love Mabel I’m hoping this new era steps up to the plate and bring something more original.
10) Astronaut In the Ocean by Masked Wolf
I’m embarrassed there is a time I was obsessed by this song. I mean the beat slaps hard there’s no denying that but once you live past the first two listens you realize this is actually a bad song that makes no sense lyrically. The song’s 15 minutes of fame was a cute moment on tiktok but feels torturous to listen to today. I hope Masked Wolf saved the money this unfortunate Hit gave him cause there is no way he is getting lucky again with a mediocre song like this.
Do you agree with my list? which song did i judge too harshly? let me know
