England post above-par 166 in bid to book final spot

Moeen Ali top-scored with a bullish, unbeaten 51 as posted a total of 166 for four after being asked to bat first in their T20 World Cup semifinal against at the on Wednesday.

Moeen’s appearance at No 4 was a clear effort to increase the scoring rate but his timing deserted him early on and the move looked set to backfire until the left-hander finally found the middle of the bat with a pair of sixes against Milne in the 18th over - a straight drive and a hook.

Moeen added another four in the final over to finish on 51 not out from 37 balls (3x4, 2x6), with captain Eoin Morgan on four from two deliveries.

Earlier opener Jonny Bairstow crashed a powerful drive well against Adam Milne to the right of Kane Williamson at mid-off but the Black Caps captain held onto a diving catch to remove the opener for 13.

The crucial wicket of in-form Jos Buttler was claimed by legspinner Ish Sodhi, who trapped the opener lbw reverse-sweeping for 29 from 24 balls with just four boundaries.

England No 3 Dawid Malan has been used as a 'floater' in the batting order for most of the tournament but appeared at No 3, with the score on 53 for two at the start of the ninth over and made a clear effort to score more quickly than is often the case with four boundaries and a six in his 42 from 30 balls.

Malan cover drove Sodhi for three fours and pulled Tim Southee for a six before bottom edging another pull against the same bowler to depart with the total on 116 for three into the 16th over.

Liam Livingstone smashed a typically monstrous straight six and a four in his 17 from 10 balls before holing out to long-off against Jimmy Neesham in the final over.

England replaced injured opening batsman Jason Roy with Sam Billings but were otherwise unchanged from the last four games.

New Zealand’s Black Caps named an unchanged XI from the team which played – and won - their last four group matches.
