Buzz Discoveries | Lisa Yaro Talks Grammy Nomination, Afrobeats, Forthcoming EP, and More...
By aL Yhusuff
Born in Nigeria but raised in the United States of America, Lisa Yaro is a Grammy-nominated songwriter, actress, and producer who has carved a niche for herself in the entertainment industry.
The delightful singer was a guest on Buzz Discoveries where she gave insights on her career, songs, and future projects.
The interview begins with Lisa Yaro giving detail on her early days and come-up.
“So I am born in and partly raised in Kaduna State, Kagoro. I’m Hausa/Fulani. I moved to the States when I was younger with my immediate family and I ended up being a songwriter out there. I worked with some artists. Got a Grammy nomination and decided to do my artistry but I wanted to give back and do something that was within my roots and my culture so I decided to come back to Nigeria to push my artistry out here. So I’m currently pursuing that, coming out with new music and finding ways to show you guys who I am and hopefully you guys are down for the journey.”
Talking about being a Hausa/Fulani and a female, she opens up on how she navigates through the male-dominated music industry.
She says;
“So for me, I find that the challenges have been similar to that in the States at being a male-dominated industry. I have to be true to who I am and in that sense, I have to make sure that the music that I do reflects on me as an artist and the path I’m trying to take. I don’t try to compare myself to the next person as far as with men in the industry, I know that’s a different spectrum of it, so with my music, I want to show that, although I’m Hausa/Fulani and the industry that I’m in is mainly male-dominated and I’m bringing a different element to it. I’m bringing something new, something fresh that I hope people will take and receive.”
On the Grammy’s Lisa reveals that she was nominated in 2017 in the category of Best R&B album for Mýa’s “Smoove Jones'', which she was one of the writers of the song "One Man Woman (Ol' Skoo' Joint)”. She also reveals that she has worked with Will.i.am, Enrique Iglesias just to name a few.
Lisa Yaro also talks about being nominated for the Grammy’s and how Afrobeats is making a difference in the world. She says;
“To be a Grammy-nominated artist feels good, it feels like a sense of accomplishment, all your hard work was not in vain. You know as an artist, writer, or producer, there’s a lot of long sleepless nights and dedication that goes into it, there’s working for free that goes into it, to gain that accomplishment has been very surreal and a blessing. I’m just proud of the fact that Afrobeats is coming into the United States and people are being receptive to it because it’s, of course, huge in Africa, it’s huge in the UK and I think now, the United States has started seeing what everyone has seen for such a long time and I feel like from my music, I want that to be a bridging gap for people to see that I was born in Nigeria, I grew up in the states, it’s almost like I’m the best of both worlds, in a sense I’m stuck in the middle so I know I’m not the only one that resonates with that. I know there are other people born in Nigeria and grew up in the state. They needed something to connect with and I feel that my music gives that sense of connection and a bridge between both worlds.”
She describes her genre of music as Afro-pop because she likes upbeats and music that puts one in a good mental state.
Lisa Yaro further explains working with Mayorkun and her forthcoming EP.
In her words;
“So, my project, Domitilla, the song that just recently came out featuring Mayorkun, that song was already completed, we had Spells as the producer on the track...and I felt like it was missing something so Mayorkun was the artist that jumped on the record and the verse he gave us was amazing of course. It was a pleasant experience working with him, you know seeing the work ethic that goes behind...my upcoming EP, I’m very excited because I have different records that will show you different sides of me. I have some dance records, some slow records but at the end of the day, it’s going to keep you engaged and I do have a surprise feature on my follow-up single, we shot the video and it’s just amazing.”
