For every artist, right at the beginning of their career gets to gather fans. They will all have different reasons for adoring the artist, ranging from the love for their music, physical appearance, sense of style among many other reasons.
For their favorite star, fans will do anything. They can sell out concerts in record time, share beautiful reviews online, stream and purchase music to shoot up chart positions, the list endless.
Having loyal fans is definitely a big plus for artists. Artists have made it a point to interact with them on social media platforms, while others have taken it a notch further by naming their fandoms. This name later translates to a sort of family to which the fan belongs, real bonding actually occurs among fans. I believe that even as you read this, you are already thinking about that special family to which you belong!
Fandom also has its pitfalls. Fans sometimes go so far as to take their favourite artists’ lyrics too seriously and attempt to practice them, yet some lyrics are morally inappropriate, while others are violent.
Some fans seek attention from their favourite artists, which may not be reciprocated for various genuine reasons, but this may nevertheless be misunderstood by the fan. An example is an Eminem fan who killed himself and his girlfriend to punish Eminem for not replying letters that he had been sending.
Consequently in the year 2000, Eminem released a song called ‘Stan’, which is about an obsessed fan. The word ‘Stan’ merges two words ‘stalker’ and ‘fan’. To date, ‘Stan’ is a mainstream word used to mean a ‘big fan’ and was added to the Oxford English dictionary in 2017. 'Stan' also became the official name for Eminem’s fandom.
Some of the biggest and commonest fandoms include the Beyonce’s ‘Beyhives’, Wizkid’s ‘WizkidFC’, BTS’ ‘ARMY’, Drake’s ‘Team Drizzy’ among others. These names are coined either by the fans or by the artists themselves. Let’s take a look at the names of several other artists’ fandoms;
