The director of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has finally responded to the claims that it was Trump who nominated her for the job, and not Muhammadu Buhari.
Recall that when she (Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala) took the position of director-general of the WTO, there were speculations that former President of the US, Donald J. Trump was the one who nominated her for the job and not Buhari.
Well, in her recent meeting with President Buhari, Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala revealed that Buhari was the person who nominated her for the WTO Job.
In her words, she said, " If not for Buhari's hundreds of calls, letters, and direct intervention, it may not have worked . "
Speaking on the issue, Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala stated that it wasn't Donald Trump who nominated her, as many people were led to believe. Instead, it was the President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari.
She said, " It was President Buhari who nominated me for the WTO Job. You wrote hundreds of letters and also called hundreds of world leaders on my behalf . "
" Without your direct intervention, it wouldn't have been possible ", she added.
Okonjo- Iweala also acknowledged the support of the Nigerian youth who rallied her on social media. She said it wouldn't have been possible without the collective help from every single Nigerian.
Meanwhile, President Buhari stated that although his government helped her, it was her track records that ultimately helped her to clinch the position as director-general of the World Trade Organization.
" We all are happy you made it, and we know you'll make Nigeria proud. Your track records both here in Nigeria, and abroad were the key factors to your success ", he said.
President Muhammadu Buhari expressed his confidence, stating that Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala will surely represent Nigeria on the global stage.
