Michelle Obama's inauguration outfit has a symbolic meaning

Joe Biden's inauguration is shaping up to be one of the most stylish events of 2021 so far. Yep, red carpets might be on hold for the foreseeable, but that's not holding back any of our favourite A-listers on the fashion front.

Lady Gaga sent the internet into overdrive with her OTT (but totally fabulous) couture dress reminiscent of The Hunger Games, while Jennifer Lopez has stunned in not one, but two different Chanel ensembles in the same day. Tell ya what, it's all happening over in D.C.

But inauguration day has also shone a light on some seriously chic looks from the likes of (now) Vice President Kamala Harris, Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton, who all wore various shades of purple.

"Michelle Obama" started trending on Twitter after she stepped out in this deep plum set by Sergio Hudson. The monotone look consisted of a long overcoat, layered over a turtleneck jumper, wide-leg trousers and a statement buckle belt.

Michelle finished the look with a particularly bouncy blow out (which also started trending):

But rather than a mere coincidence there might actually be a symbolic reason behind Michelle's berry 'fit, with Kamala and Hillary also sporting variants of the same shade.

Kamala stepped out wearing a similar tone - a vibrant indigo coat and a matching midi dress by Christopher John Rogers.

Making it three for three, Hillary Clinton also stepped out wearing purple in the form Michelle Obama's inauguration outfit has a symbolic meaning

So, what's the symbolic meaning of wearing purple for Inauguration Day? Well, as the result of mixing blue and red (the Democratic and Republican party colours, respectively) purple is often associated with bipartisanship and unity.

It's also one of the official colours of the suffragist movement, the National Woman’s Party. “Purple is the color of loyalty, constancy to purpose, unswerving steadfastness to a cause,” the party wrote in a newsletter in 1913#somethingtowatch
