The Vampire Diaries is one of the CW's most successful and longest-running shows of all time. After eight seasons on air, the characters that began the series were drastically different from the people that the wound up being by the end of itHowever, despite the fact that the show itself as well as it's cast of characters transformed completely from beginning to end, there were quite a few elements of the show that were introduced at the start which were resolved towards the end of the series. So with that in mind, what did the TVD characters in season one want that they actually got by season eight?

10Matt Wanted A Stable Life

Within the wild world of Mystic Falls, Matt Donovan is one person who very consistently just seemed to want his life to be as normal and lacking in drama and danger as possible. He often found himself drawn into the supernatural turmoil that constantly occupied his friends, and while he always helped them, he mostly just tried to hold everything together despite his unstable sister and absent mother.
As sheriff of Mystic Falls it's clear that Matt probably has to deal with more than most, but his life seems to be stable and secure at least.
9Caroline Wanted Stefan

Granted, their happiness together was about as short lived as it could possibly be, but it has to be said, Caroline set her sights on Stefan the moment that they met and ultimately she did snag him.

Yes, he killed himself immediately after their wedding and their wedding was a ruse to draw Katherine out of the shadows, but Caroline's assertion in the pilot that they were "planning a June wedding" was apparently more prescient than she realized at the time.
8Damon Wanted Elena

Damon Salvatore began his journey on The Vampire Diaries with one thing on his mind; Katherine Pierce. However, once he realized that she betrayed him and abandoned him, his focus shifted from Katherine to Elena, and he never really lost sight of Elena as his one true love.
It took an enormous amount of suffering and and drama between the entire love triangle of Damon, Stefan, and Elena, but Damon did wind up with Elena in the end.

7Bonnie Wanted To Protect The Town

Bonnie was just starting to come into her own power and accept the fact that she was an incredible witch in the first season of TVD, but it's undeniable that even then, her focus was on protecting the innocent humans in the town from supernatural dangers.

It's pretty appropriate then that Bonnie ended the series literally saving Mystic Falls from hell itself.
6Elena Wanted Her Parents Back

The series opens with Elena and her brother Jeremy trying to cope with the sudden loss of both of their parents. And although Elena's suffering seemed to never end throughout the show, she clearly and understandably never got over that trauma and always dreamed of having her parents again.

Granted, she didn't actually get to reunite with them until the afterlife, but ultimately Elena's dreams of seeing them again came true.
5Caroline Wanted Confidence

Despite putting on the veneer of a popular queen bee, Caroline Forbes was ultimately insecure and never felt she was good enough in season 1.
However, that lack of confidence was pretty much gone by the end of the series. She was not only strong, powerful, and ready to take on any threat that she came up against, but she also felt truly loved by the people around her.
4Stefan Wanted To Find Peace

Although Stefan seemed like the put together Salvatore brother on the outside, it's safe to say that internally, he was sincerely conflicted and in pain pretty much all the time. He never really got a solid handle on being a vampire, and he didn't like it either.

It's unfortunate that he literally had to die in order to find peace, but that sacrifice was likely worth it for Stefan.
3Damon Wanted To Be A Better Person

Stefan was always a mess, but Damon was far messier. He seemed to revel in being known as the crazy and unpredictable vampire, however beneath that bravado was a deeply unhappy and self-loathing person.
It was a rough road and Damon faltered in his quest to be not quite so terrible many times, but by the end of the series he was something approaching heroic, or at least halfway decent.

2Elena Wanted A Happy Human Life

Pretty much from the moment that the Salvabros got to town, Elena was constantly at the center of a terrifying and turbulent supernatural world that constantly left those around her suffering and in danger.
And unsurprisingly, Elena wanted nothing more than to escape that drama and have a normal and happy human life. And it may have taken her eight seasons to get there, but it would appear that she finally got that wish.
1Everyone Wanted To Find Love

Although the supernatural element of The Vampire Diaries is obviously an essential aspect of the show, most of the characters within the show always dreamed of nothing more than finding true love.

And although many of them wound up finding it with people they never expected to fall in love with, ultimately nearly every character who wanted to find romance at the start of the series did by the end.
