The 10 Best British Shows On Netflix, Ranked (According To IMDb)

One of the reasons why Netflix has become the number one streaming platform is because they get an array of content from around the world, including from across the pond in the United Kingdom. Netflix has even created original content, like the show Bodyguard, which had fans hooked and got a good score of 8.1 on IMDb.

British shows have developed their own fanbase and tackle just about everything from crime and drama to comedy. Shows like Cuckoo and Doctor Foster will arouse any viewer to hit the play button, but there are shows that have received much higher ratings via IMDb.

10Sex Education (2019): 8.3

Sex Education had people talking since its debut in 2019. The show is a comedy-drama centered around an insecure teenager and it became a critical and commercial success for the streaming platform. Audiences were hooked by the unique premise of an insecure teen having mixed feelings about sex, despite his mother being a sex therapist.

After helping another student with his sexual performance anxiety, he had a lightbulb moment and he went into business offering sex advice with the help of another female student. The show is, in a way, a coming-of-age story, as a group of teens come to terms with their sexual orientation.

9Last Tango In Halifax (2012): 8.3

This show originally aired on BBC in 2012 before becoming available on Netflix for a wider audience. The show has a fun premise that was highly praised by viewers. It focuses on an older generation - two widows to be exact - and it is an uplifting love story that would be appreciated by viewers of any age.

The two widows once had feelings for each other when they were teens before one of them moved away. Years later, they reconnect through Facebook and become aware that the strong feelings they once had never disappeared. They soon start a new journey of love, while still dealing with the drama of their established families.

8The Last Kingdom (2015): 8.4

It's no surprise that The Last Kingdom received a considerably high score, seeing as it has a huge fanbase. The show is a perfect addition for any viewer who is a fan of historical fiction combined with riveting drama.

The show originally aired on BBC America and BBC Two before Netflix gained the sole rights to the third season. The main character, Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon) must choose between his birth country that he was taken from and the people who raised him as he seeks revenge against the people who killed his family and his surrogate father.

7Top Boy (2011): 8.4

If you're looking for a crime-drama to sink your teeth into, Top Boy should be added to your watch list. But the show's debut might be perplexing to some. Top Boy originally aired on TV for two seasons before being dropped. In 2019, the show was picked up by Netflix for a brand new season, but it was titled as the first installment. The prior seasons were renamed by Netflix as Top Boy: Summerhouse.

The show combines themes of crime, gang life, thriller aspects and corrupted innocence. There's a brewing tension between two gangs in the housing estates. One character aims to be top boy, while another has good intentions but was forced to grow up too quickly.

6After Life (2019): 8.4

Fans of Ricky Gervais will rejoice in his black comedy-drama, After Life. Written, produced and directed by Gervais, the show follows a man faced with a decision after his wife passes away from cancer. Tony (Gervais) decides that he will punish the world for her death by no longer caring about anything.

His new attitude doesn't come easy. His friends and family try to push him back to being the loveable and nice guy he once was. The show is praised for having heartwarming moments, lessons about love and comedy, but with the realism of heartbreak and tragedy.

5Call The Midwife (2012): 8.4

Call the Midwife developed into one of the most popular period dramas for its tackling of topics such as healthcare, pregnancy, abortion, poverty, illness and cultural issues. The show started its run in 2012 and has so far had nine seasons. The show's creator, Heidi Thomas, originally based the show on the memoirs of a nurse who worked as a midwife in poverty-stricken East London.

Set in the 1950s, it follows a new nurse as she finds herself at a convent called Nonnatus House as a midwife. First daunted by her new surroundings, she comes to form a bond with other nurses and sees the reality of the lives of their patients.

4The Inbetweeners (2008 - 2010): 8.4

The Inbetweeners is a British coming-of-age teen sitcom that focuses on the lives of ordinary teenagers trying to figure out life. One suburban teen and his friends go about their days dealing with school, friendship, male bonding and the rise of adolescent sexuality.

It's a reminder to viewers of past years filled with awkward teen encounters, trying to get the cool kids to take interest and having the guts to ask out someone way out of your league. Fans of the show praised its witty humor and it's above par character development that made it relatable.

3Broadchurch (2013 - 2017): 8.4

Broadchurch has, over the years, risen in popularity. It might be due to the chemistry between the lead two detectives the show centers around. It might also be because it stars David Tennent as Detective Alec Hardy, alongside Olivia Colman as Detective Ellie Miller.

The show's original storyline starts with the discovery of a bloodied young boy's corpse on the beach of an unassuming town. Detective Hardy is given authority over Detective Miller. As the investigation ensues and the culprit is revealed, the upcoming trial might lead to the town's secrets being revealed. Fans of the show felt it has a good balance between crime, thrills and individual stories that make it binge-worthy.

2The Great British Bake Off (2010 - ): 8.6

Who hasn't heard of The Great British Bake Off? The show has gained immense popularity since being available on Netflix and follows a basic guideline for its competition. Twelve bakers compete to impress the judges with their baking skills. One contestant is eliminated each round until there's only one left to be crowned the winner.

Many love the show's main judges, but some had qualms over them being replaced once the series changed networks. Nonetheless, it's sure to have any viewer whipping out the cookbook and dusting off the whisk.

1Sherlock (2010 - 2017): 9.1

It's no surprise that one of the most highly acclaimed British series available on Netflix is Sherlock. The famed detective has been played many times by different actors on the small and big screen, but Benedict Cumberbatch's version has received a lot of worthy praise and is often pitted against other versions.

The show took Sherlock and his trusted friend into the modern age. Set in London, Sherlock is a consultant who's often not well-liked due to his high functioning sociopathic behavior. As murder cases flood in, interweaved is a bigger story at play that Sherlock must solve.
