Have you ever passed by a guitarist by the roadside singing his heart out? Did you enjoy the show or just went past?
Street performance, also called busking can be a pot of gold. The art of busking is the reason why these famous celebrities are on our T.Vs, radios, phones and all over our minds today.
Ed Sheeran (Singer/Songwriter)
Sheeran began his career by travelling around the UK sleeping on couches, playing open mics, and busking everywhere he could find an audience who would listen. Eventually Jamie Foxx would come across him and invite him to play one at one of his house parties, this would be the beginning of his rise to stardom. He’s now known for having the most streamed song of all time with “Shape of You”.
Pierce Brosnan (Actor)
After moving from Ireland to England in his youth, Brosnan couldn’t wait to get out of his London classroom, where his nickname was “Irish” -and into the art world. While training to be a commercial illustrator, he attended a workshop where a fire eater taught him the craft. Soon enough, he had one of the hottest acts on the streets and caught the attention of a circus agent. That stint let to classes at Drama Centre London, which got his acting off the ground and eventually into an Aston Martin. I find him to be the coolest 007.
Bernie Mac (Comedian)
Bernie calls himself one of the "Original Kings of Comedy." This is for a good reason, he is hilarious!
Mac begun by telling jokes throughout the South Side of Chicago. The two years he spent on these the streets made him fearless. He had the guts to begin his first show, HBO’s "Def Comedy Jam" by telling the audience, "I ain’t scared of you motherf***ers."
In 2012, in neighborhood where he grew up, part of the street was named "Bernie Mac Street" in his honor.
Benjamin Franklin (One of the founding fathers of the United States of America)
His long list of titles includes Author, Diplomat, Founding father, Inventor, Postmaster, Scientist, Street performer. Ben Franklin was pretty much everything.
As a youngster in Boston, Franklin would perform songs and read poems he wrote that commented on current events.
His father however didn't want his son busking around town so he put an end to little Ben's street act once and for all.
After growing up under such conditions, it’s no wonder he became such an advocate for free speech.
Steve Martin (Comedian)
Funny man Martin did perform comedy and play the banjo for lucky passers by. Although he may have long given up busking, the veteran actor has since set up the 'Steve Martin Bluegrass Prize' for brilliance in banjo.
