ROSA REE: The Female Rapper who is beating the odds to command her place in Hip-Hop

Rosary Robert, known by her stage name Rosa Ree is a Tanzanian female rapper, singer and songwriter.
The self styled 'Rap Goddess' was born in Moshi, Kilimanjaro and studied in Kenya, which gives her that strong connection with the Kenyan music industry.
She begun her singing career via social media posts which drew attention to her talent.
Consequently in 2015, Rosa Ree was signed as an artist by The Industry Studios, a label headed by Tanzanian rapper and producer Nahreel.
Three years later she signed to South African record label Dimo Entertainment however after switching several labels, the rapper is currently solo.
Amazingly she writes her own lyrics and music but has mastered the art of effective collaboration, not only for the purposes of creating good music but to also tap into a bigger fan-base.
She has worked with Emtee, Khaligraph Jones, Bill Nass among many others.
In 2019 she collaborated with Timmy Tdat -a Kenyan rapper on the song called "Kipopo", sparking speculation about a romance between the two artists, but these were denied.
At the start of her rap career, she faced many critics, some of whom included peers in the industry who had no belief that she could succeed as a female rapper, especially in Tanzania.
In an interview, she described her music as a revolution "...we want to make people believe that females can play a game that is dominated by males".
She also added that “gender discrimination has been my biggest challenge in the music industry and specifically the genre I am doing. Many people assume that women should not pursue rap or have the ambition to thrive in any male-dominated sector. It’s as if you should either sing or go home and cook, maybe raise children"
She has addressed this negative talk in her songs like 'Champion' and 'One Time' without mincing her words.
She has several other hit songs up her sleeve including among others my current favourite -'Usiyempenda kaja', ‘Sukuma Ndinga’, ‘Asante Baba’, 'Banjuka' as well as a collabo with Ugandan rapper Fik Fameica -'Acha Ungese'.
The tenacity in her rap, coupled with consistency has bolstered her fame beyond the Tanzanian borders. This has landed her ambassadorial deals for brands like Belaire and Castle Lite.
