The National Unity Platform (NUP) unveiled the official campaign poster of their presidential flagbearer Robert Kyagulanyi a.k.a Bobi Wine yesterday at the party headquarters.
The move comes after the previous poster was allegedly rejected by the electoral commission because Bobi Wine wore a red berret on the poster.
Bobi Wine will be the top challenger against Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who is the current president of Uganda.
How did a pop star end up in politics?
Raised in Kamwokya, Bobi Wine sang about the struggles of the urban poor or 'ghetto people' as some may call them.
His turning point came in Uganda's 2016 Presidential election. The strongest opponent of that time -Besigye had lost again to Museveni, the sitting President. The result was opposed by Besigye who was put under house arrest so that he couldn’t mobilize protests.
Bobi Wine visited him at home and played his new hit “Situka!” or “Rise up!”—a rallying cry for the disheartened.
A few months later in 2017, a court nullified the results of a parliamentary election in Kyadondo East, the constituency where Bobi Wine lived. A by-election had to be held to fill this parliamentary seat.
Bobi Wine registered for the by-election as an independent candidate, and began preparing for a life in politics, tidying up his image (like cutting off his dreadlocks, changing his dresscode, enrolling for a law course and so forth), all in preparation for his future career in politics.
During the parliamentary campaign, Bobi Wine started a movement with the slogan 'people power, our power' during his heated campaign. Supporters of this movement wore red berrets and other red clothing.
With strong support from the ghetto people who loved him mostly for his music that exposed their plight, Bobi Wine won the by-election and became a member of Parliament for Kyadondo East constituency todate.
Consequently, Red emerged as the color of political resistance in Uganda, while 'People Power' became a cause fueled by a new generation of Ugandans who are ready to remake their country, with Bobi Wine at the helm.
In 2017, when parliament introduced a measure to scrap a clause in the constitution requiring presidential candidates to be under the age of 75. The amendment aimed to allow the president, Yoweri Museveni, then 73, to run for office again in 2021.
Protests spread across the country, under the slogan of “Togikwatako!” or “Don’t touch it!” in Luganda. “It” meaning the constitution. Opposition lawmakers wore red ribbons to parliament and disrupted the session. One of these lawmakers was Bobi Wine.
The next day, they were dragged out of the chamber by soldiers.
As soon they were gone, parliament rushed to pass the motion, and the age limit to presidential candidates was scrapped.
Bobi Wine became even more determined to contest for presidency thus, last July he became leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP), a political party which is an alternative to the failed attempt to register 'People Power' as a political party due to numerous hinderances.
However NUP ran into a legal case challenging it's eligibility. The court had this case thrown out, citing greed and money minting intentions by the accusers. This was a big win for Bobi Wine.
Next year, under NUP, Bobi Wine intends to stand for President of Uganda, against Museveni who has been president for the last 35 years.
According to an online source, Bobi Wine was calling on people all over the world to “keep their eyes” on Uganda because international attention was the only way to “stop human rights abuses and impunity in Uganda today”.
Bobi Wine has captured the hearts of many young Ugandans with his persistent calls for President Yoweri Museveni to retire.
Since he expressed his presidential ambition, police and the military have repeatedly dispersed his rallies and beaten and detained him and his supporters and even raided his political party headquarters.
Museveni accuses Bobi Wine of encouraging young people to riot and has declared that people associated with him are “a misguided group being used by some foreigners to destabilise Uganda."
