Music - An Integral Part Of The Owambe Culture.
Nigeria
1
Owambe is a lavish and flamboyant party thrown by Nigerians which is usually depicted by a parade of extravagance, luxurious spending, color, paparazzi, lots of food, music, dance, and networking.
Originating from Western Nigeria, particularly the Yoruba culture. Such parties are usually thrown during birthdays, house-warmings, naming, reunions, but most especially during weddings and sometimes, funerals.
One of the star attractions of owambe parties is the variety of foods served at these parties ranging from Jollof rice, moin-moin, porridge, Amala, etc.
Another star attraction is the music, which is oftentimes loud but it is the engine that keeps the money spraying, keeps the people grooving and keeps the liquor flowing, music is the heart and life of owambes.
Music highlights the celebratory mood of any function because on occasions like this people want to dance to express their joy and what better and probably saner way to dance? with music.
Live band on stage rocking as waiters zip through tables with trays of Jollof rice and the inferior foods, or baskets of drinks, swerving the lavishly painted fingernails of anxious Big Mummies.
Music is an integral part of the owambe culture, which due to the significance has unlocked opportunities as a source of income for musicians/bands in the country. Artists who benefit tremendously from the culture are those that have tailored a particular song to these occasions, either for weddings or birthdays.
A typical example is Simi's 'Owambe', rarely do DJ's resist the urge to play her song at every function synonymous with her song that's even when she's not performing live herself.
The owanbe culture is a ginormous one that has been amplified by music because It is hardly ever an owambe if there's no music, the music is an integral part of the party, the literal life of the party.
