Only a handful of producers possess the ability to serve fresh sounds with every project.
His productions are a breath of fresh air different from the norm, different every time you listen, every beat is uniquely different from the last he makes beats like no one I have ever seen from Africa.
Real name Julian Nicco-Annan, Juls was born in Hackney, East London he started experimenting with different sounds in 2012/2013 before he started sending beats to rappers, some of his early works are Teef Teef and Skin Tight with Mr. Eazi.
His work ethic speaks volumes with four projects to his name, Ojekoo, Leap Of Faith, Colours, and his recently released happy place EP.
The exciting aspects of his projects aren’t just the crisp combination of sound but the way he bridges musical gaps between the most talented acts across the continent, his style is detailed and uncluttered.
Speaking on his Happy Place EP Juls said ‘Happy Place is a part of the progressive playlist I’m curating throughout the year, its good music for everyone to vibe to I’m blending different vibes and music cultures I’ve been listening to lately, Baile funk, Reggeaton, Lovers Rock, etc.’
Happy Place is exactly what it is, every song makes you want to vibe or dance, Soweto Blues opens the EP featuring South African powerhouse Busiswa and UK singer Jay Karis. Here Juls starts the EP with the Amapiano vibe guessing that's why the track is called Soweto Blues.
Saxophone laced Tembisa is this writer’s favorite track off the EP, starts with a crisp combination of sounds a true delight to listen to Juls Minimalist style is quite evident on his EP, Tembisa eases you in with a warlike chant, this song is sought of like preparation of war, something to give ginger.
This is the first time this writer ever heard of the singer Aymos and he was impressed too, Tembisa is a worthy soundtrack for the Black Panther movie.
Next up is Beg Friend featuring TOBi, Canadian Nigerian singer, Juls Afropop style carries TOBi’s expressive melody. Beg friend is easily interpreted as friends showing fake love.
Once again Juls explores on Wishes with the reggaeton vibes featuring Jahcure here Jahcure sings about heartbreak ‘she said sorry don’t ease no pain’ rings true.
Final track Your Number featuring Ghanaian icons, King Promise and Mugeez(other half of R2bees) opens up with amazing adlibs from King Promise opening guitar feels like a nice touch while both artists try to woo a lady on their verses.
Happy Place is delightful and entertaining on it Juls explores and experiments with a variety of genres ranging from Afrobeats, Highlife, House, Amapiano to reggae.
