I come in peace... Nice arewa groove. For the sake of clarity Inyamiri or Nyamiri is from what the Hausas understood when they heard the Igbo man say "Nyem mmiri" which means "Give me water".. That's what the man was called after that day.. I don't see the need the reason to see it as an insult.

The phrase "Inyamuri" was popularised under derogatory circumstances by some people particularly some bad Hausas during and immediately after the Nigerian civil war of 6th July 1967 - 15th January 1970 waged by the Nigerian State against the then Republic of Biafra, a nation hurriedly birthed following a referendum to protect surviving Igbos from the then genocidal onslaught against them by some Hausas/northerners. In the callous war which claimed the lives of over 3 million Igbos, a majority of whom died of thirst and starvation caused by the delibrate blockade of food supply channels to the Igbos, dehydrated and starving Igbos close to the point of death were constrained to beg anyone they could find for a drink of water by pleading in their local dialect "Nyem mmiri" which means "give me water". Rather than give them water, in most cases, their aggressors had good laughs and made a mockery of them by referring to them as "Inyamuri". A section of the lyrics to this song hints at wanting to laugh thus: "Comedy, my comedy, I want to laugh you ("Inyamuri") be my comedy, you be my comedy...". The Igbos are still largely the subjects of attacks till date as witnessed in the recent Nigerian elections of 2023 where many of them were prevented from voting, while some who managed to vote, were beaten, killed or had their shops burnt. History needs to be a mandatory subject in Nigerian schools as this would help to guard against these kinds of derogatory name-calling /statements, whether made innocently or not, to aid the psychological healing and reintegration of victims.
