The Convo | Kcee Sheds Light On The Cultural Praise Vol. 3, His Come-up, Re-invention and More…
Nigerian singer and songwriter, Kcee formerly a member of the defunct boy band, KCpresh was a guest on this episode of The Convo where he sheds light on his new project, Cultural Praise Vol 3 which is a collaborative project with the Okwesili Eze Group.
Beginning the interview, he mentioned that the Cultural Praise Vol. 3 will be his 4th studio album as a solo artist, he also acknowledges that he has put out a number of single records which didn’t make it to any compilation.
Kcee acknowledged the guidance of God and his persistence for having his career spanning over 22 years.
Talking about his evolution in music, he explains what led to this new version of him in Cultural Praise. In his words;
“...my father was a DJ, he was selling records, those DJ's then they were selling records, so for me, growing up in my father’s ambiance...I learned a lot which really helped me today. Part of the things I learned is the ability to diversify to other genres of music and to always rebrand yourself, that has helped me. So, in every moment in my career, I always think of how to bring out a new Kcee, another version of Kcee, another Kcee that my fans will appreciate. I have die hard fans that love me, whether I do anything or not but for you to keep them and keep spicing them up, you need to reinvent yourself...this Cultural Praise was strategic, it was a big risk that worked, it was a huge risk. In fact, I had 2 of them, I had the Cultural Praise and another genre of music, I did both and I tried this first...the second might be my next album”
Explaining the spark behind Cultural Praise, “the truth is the whole credit will go to E-Money, my brother, because he was also in the record store with my father, grew up with local music, Oliver De Coque, etc, he loved it more than I do. Each time he loves to bring those Ogene boys...and every time as a creative mind I was always thinking, I think I need to record this, I need to put this into digital...I always told myself I will never mix it up with our digital recording, I want to hear the local sound...it was playing in my head every day, it got to a point in August break, we were traveling to the east and he came with those boys they were playing and immediately I heard it, I called them, as soon as we get to Lagos, we need to record this...when I got to Lagos, after a week or so, I called them and we recorded…the choruses sound like they are with you when they are recording…” - he said
He further narrated how he did the lead and how it corresponded with their backup, and how every other person didn’t want him to release the project.
During the interview, Kcee disclosed how his promoters and team felt the project was too long with songs being 10 minutes long and that didn’t stop the drive behind him.
Furthermore, he noted that the success of the project was quite unprecedented and it felt good getting the positive review he got.
When asked about his thoughts on Cultural music, he said, “....we have missed it for so long...bringing back the originality of the African sound is everything for us right now and Africans in the diaspora are jumping on it, it helps them remember home...anybody that has a local sound right now, makes it big, it’s a phase, this is not the first time...there was a time we were all about South African videos...it got to a time it phased out...now is the time for everyone to embrace the local sound”
The singer also discloses that after 22 years in the industry, the growth has been quite remarkable, “...it keeps growing rapidly...you can remember the era of Eedris Abdulkareem when they started the journey, it was huge, it was like a revolution, everybody was excited, they were adorable. If you see the golden boy of Africa, Tony Tetuila with the golden hair, they shut down the whole of Ghana and Cameroun, they shut down other African countries, that era passed.
2face came in with his energy, started going further, to East Africa, West Africa, more African countries, from that era more boys started coming, D’banj era, everybody has been contributing, the journey has been going fast...look at Wizkid, Davido, Burna, The Grammys they have recognized us, it keeps growing...the growth has been remarkable. Look at the new boys, Omah Lay, Rema, Fireboy, they are on fire and it’s because of the work that has been done over the years…” - he said
Still, on the growth, Kcee made it known that talent isn’t enough, one needs to be ready in order to attain success.
