And Then There Was DMX: An Obituary Of Pain, Joy And Hip Hop Legacy

Of all the countless video clips of DMX floating internally on the internet, one, in particular, stands out. It from Woodstock 1999, a music festival in New York that was besieged with so much controversy that little is remembered of it- except for DMX’s performance. He’s seen glistening with sweat on his forehead, rope chain bouncing off his neck, his bulging biceps flexing from the red dungarees he wore. The audience is a sea of people, extending as far the eyes could see. For a rock or pop star like The Beatles or Michael Jackson, that attendance would have been jaw-dropping. But for a rapper, especially one who was as raw and gritty as DMX, it was simply underheard of. The crowd at his set is recorded to be over two hundred thousand and it would never be repeated for sure. What’s more, it was largely made up of white people who typically were not the regular hip-hop fan.
