Asha Gangali a Nigerian born African hip hop Crooner, started music back in 2002 as a local promoter in DC, brought Acts like TI, Young bloods for the first time to DC, came back to Nigeria to further his career. Many of Asha Gangali songs become very popular and trendy online with a great number of streaming and downloads on Boomplay.

Asha Bunmi Fapounda, better known as Asha Gangali, stands out from the lot of Nigerians in the creative industry who on their steam returned home from overseas. He came back home with Rock Da Mic Africa, an entertainment company that empowers African youths through entertainment.

CAREER AND ACHIEVEMENTS
Rock Da Mic has two subsidiaries that are independent companies. They are Rock Da Mic Media and Rock Da Mic Talent Agency. Rock Da Mic Africa has maintained very tight relationships in Nigeria, and a very strong network in the United States of America and also in the UK. These connections converge under Rock Da Mic Africa.

The company sources for major projects and channels it through Rock Da Mic Media for syndication through television and other electronic and digital platforms. Rock Da Mic Talent Agency seeks talents and empowers them. The idea started in 2005 to reposition artistes who had hits but were not making money and wanted to leverage on their hits.

From working on that, another challenge presented itself. There are lots of artistes with potential hit on the streets. For them, Rock Da Mic talent showcase was created. Through it, artistes like Timaya and Wande Coal were discovered. With that success, even the big artistes came knocking on Asha’s door.

A compilation CD dating back to 2005 featuring the works of Timaya, Wande Coal, the late Goldie and LKT among others is available as evidence that it was Asha’s Rock Da Mic that gave them the first platform into mainstream entertainment.

For its 10th anniversary, there is a plan to honour one of the successful protégées of Rock Da Mic with an induction into its Hall of Fame. Asha was happy at the prospect. “It will be an artiste we discovered and hold in high esteem. We’re going to honour our own and give new artists the chance to showcase and we will have a freestyle battle. We are going to relaunch with the aim to project talents from the new era.”

The coincidence with the Asa name is not the only instance that Asha has to share a name. One of his aliases is Gangali which D’banj has also assumed in recent times. On this, he said he would rather allow the public to be the judge.

“The masses know who started what trend. I started a lot of trends in this industry. I don’t come to the media to say a lot of things. I have started a lot of trends that people follow. My new EP is tagged ‘Hello e’. If you look into Hello e you will trace it to artistes like Olamide and LKT and they are mostly my protégées that have used it in their songs. My slogans have influenced a lot of artistes. When I came to Nigeria, I knew that there was a female artist named Asa. We had to call a truce with the CEO of Questionmark.

Asa was not even in the picture. We met at Nicon Hilton I sat down with them and we had a truce that Asa will be the female artiste’s while mine will be Asha. I wasn’t ready to frustrate Asa because she is a great musician. That issue was frustrating her. I am not the one with issues. I came from America with my name. Just because I left the game does not mean I won’t come back.”

He also explained how got the alias, Gangali.

“It has a Jamaican origin. I was trained as a musician by Jamaicans. That whole Gangali sound was in me but when I came into Nigeria, I had to fit the sound into what is commercially viable. Now, it is Asha Gangali. I came into the industry with the R&B sound and those songs were very successful but over the years, there has been transition and my whole sound changed. The Gangali persona came in 2008 so I have merged the Asha with the Gangali.

Before 2005, Asha lived and worked in the United States. His first album in the US was titled ‘Rhythm of Love’. He featured in, co-produced, orchestrated, and managed artistes on the album, which he claims was a big success in America. “A lot of people would like to dispute that and that was long before the digital era in Nigeria. If you go online now, you will see that I was part of an album that was released in 2003 in America that went gold and was nominated for Soul Train Awards."
