Top Select: Diamond Platnumz "First of All"

Diamond Platnumz, Tanzanian top music star, has released his long awaited extended play record titled "First of All". The EP has a total of ten amazing tracks featuring top artists from Tanzania and other regions of Africa, artists like Adekunle Gold, Zuchu, Mbosso, Jaywillz, Focalistic, Costa Titch and Pabi Cooper. These ten tracks contain a wide variety of music genres from Bongo Flava to Afrobeats, Afrofusion, Amapiano and even more. After listening to the album for a while, Boomplay team would like to introduce this project with a bit more in-depth review, track highlights and share some of his thoughts and quotes.

The first track we recommend to you is called 'Mtasubiri', which featured Tanzanian top artist Zuchu. This is a Bongo Flava duet; the unique vocals of Zuchu blends with Diamond Platnumz's heartfelt singing, makes you can’t help but wonder about the story behind the song. "'Mtasubiri' means ‘You'll keep waiting. It's a love song talking to people who are in opposition. You know, in every relationship there are always people who are against you. It's you telling your haters, 'If you guys are waiting for us to break up, you'll be waiting until I don't know when!'" says Diamond Platnumz.

We all know that Diamond Platnumz was first known by his Bongo Flava song ‘Kamwambie’, which won three times at the Tanzania Music Awards. In addition, he has many bongo flava songs that have gained widespread attention and love from his adoring fans. So what exactly is Bongo Flava? Why is this music genre so popular in Tanzania?

Bongo Flava is actually the nickname of Tanzania music, it has the roots of American Hip hop and Tanzanian traditional music styles such as taarab and dansi, the genre has also been influenced by Reggae, R&B, and Afrobeats, which make it a very unique music style. Lyrics of Bongo Flava are usually in Swahili or English, but 'Mtasubiri' is a purely Swahili song. Diamond said "Most of the songs, I've been mixing English and Swahili so I wanted a typical duet for my Swahili nation." In the past, Bongo flava lyrics usually tackle social and political issues, but nowadays, lyric topics have changed to love, heartbreak, success and hardship. This change shows that Bongo Flava is increasingly influenced by more and more younger people, and their different interests and changes in standard of living.

The second track we want to recommend is called 'Sona', it is an Afrofusion track featuring famous Nigerian Afrofusion artist Adekunle Gold. This collaboration is definitely unexpected but full of surprises. The sound of the wind instrument is like an angel, whispering the deep love of the two gentlemen to their beloved girls 'Girl your love is all me I want for life oh, Hey sona.' Speaking of this collaboration, Diamond Platnumz said "The plan was not to have any collabs on this EP, but I thought I should at least have Adekunle on my EP; then two or three. I was like, ‘I think I need to get a different taste– something different. That's how the collab came."

The reason why this EP titled ‘First of All’ is because Diamond Platnumz mentioned that he will release his fourth album this year, so this project seems like the first step of his plan. From the selection, production and features of all the songs, we can see that Diamond Platnumz has really put a lot of efforts into this EP, because of that, it has actually gained a huge amount of attention and love. Excluding the songs we recommended above, there are still many great songs featured in the project, click the link below and you’ll find the whole EP, hope you enjoy the Music!!!
